Didn't you learn your lesson this year with trading your first? And that was for Erik Karlsson. There is no way 2 years of Rakell is worth a top 5 pick.

Rather harsh wording but yeah Jones/Dubnyk could easily be sub .900 and the team is still quite shabby, most of the core aging too... bleak future indeed

Well my point more stemmed from them starting by trading away their best player for futures

Trading away what will likely be a top 5 pick is....bold.

I cannot imagine Seattle is going to go after an 8 million 36 year old defensemen on a long term deal or a horrible goalie on a horrible contract in the expansion draft.

With all due respect, there seems to be quite a bit of denial amongst Sharks fans as to what they are and how bleak their future is with the bloated, aging contracts.

Meier is gonna get a 10m plus qualifying offer in a couple years, which isn't going to work with the Hab's cap structure. Sorry!

We can’t afford Meier right now, and we definitely can’t afford his $10 million QO. The habs reject.

Agree 100%. We should only base our projections for this upcoming season soley off of last year. Don't take into account previous years.

Can change it to MTL's 1st in this scenario instead of SJ's for Rakell.

Just because Meier's QO at the end of the contract in 3 seasons is 10mil DOESN'T mean he's getting 10mil.

If Meier produces in the ballpark of a 10mil player, his starting QO will be 10mil.

If Meier produces as the 6-7mil player he plays as and is worth currently he'll get an offer from SJ/MTL for 6-7mil and if he likes the team/his role, he'll sign for that much. If he likes the team/his role but not too much to the point that he's willing to become a UFA if not qualified at the 10mil bc he thinks he can get 8mil elsewhere, the team can resign him either at 8mil or match an offer that another team gives when he becomes a UFA if he really gets an offer at 8mil.

If he doesn't like the team/his role, he becomes a UFA and signs for 6-7mil elsewhere.

But why would you even do that. By trading Meier for futures you are clearly tanking so why would you then trade any 1st for what is essentially a rental.

No matter what happens at the end of the contract, we still can’t afford his current contract.

Why ? Make space for him and trade other players... You don't say know to Timo Meier because your scared of what our salary cap will look like in 3 years... We don't even know what will be the salary cap in 3 years..

MTL afford Meier at 3mil if they're sending Armia's 2.6mil. 0.4mil is certainly manageable. Trade Kulak and there's room.

I’d rather have Danault (who is free) plus 2 1sts than Meier. And you’re insane if you wouldn’t as well.

My bad, I did not notice the retained salary until now. That makes it much more manageable to keep him, although I’m still not 100% sold on paying 2 1sts plus Armia for a guy that it would be nearly impossible to re-sign in 3 years. (Due to the $3-$7 million raise, and the fact that we need to re-sign KK, Suzuki, Romanov, and maybe Caufield before then) And because of his QO he’s almost guaranteed to become a UFA, since he won’t be able to be qualified, and him being on the market drives up his asking price.

Danault is not in the trade ? you can still keep him, Meier is at 3m for the next 3 years. Trade Byron and you just save 400 000 and let go Tatar. For the late 1st pick I don't trust Timmins with those pick and I prefer the big 30 goals scorer wigner that is just 24 yrs then some suspect

I didn’t see the retained salary when I said this, so NVM about that. Although I extremely disagree about the Timmins comment. Can you really say with a straight face that you dislike their drafting in the last 3 years especially?

It's way to early to comment on the last 3 draft, there is only KK that is in the NHL and we had top 15 pick what we won't have this year especially if you add Meier and look at his resume with 1st round pick between 15-32 It's a disaster (Sherbak/McCarron/Tinordi/Beaulieu/Leblanc/Fisher/Chipchura) The only time he didn't miss is in 2007 with Pac

I can’t say much for when there was another GM, since I wasn’t a hockey fan and IDK how Gainey & Gauthier ran things. I know that in 2013 the habs’ drafting certainly was hurt by Bergevin’s mandate to pick people with size, and both Bergevin & Timmins have admitted that they made a mistake in 2013. And Scherbak was a skilled player who just didn’t work out. The vast majority of the next 20 or so players drafted after him haven’t worked out at the NHL level. And since then the habs have drafted Juulsen & Poehling who will both be solid NHLers (assuming health). And they’ve done a fairly good job in the later rounds too, specifically with Romanov & Norlinder more recently.
