I can't help but feel like he's not going to be a Sabre long term. The team just seems reluctant to commit to him.

Interestingly the team announced it as "center" Sam reinhart. Gotta change my lines

Another “prove it” deal after his first “prove it” deal. Think we kinda know what he is now, but Buffalo doesn’t seem impressed for some reason? Or he isn’t impressed idk

Or a global pandemic hit, crippling the economy and with it the entire profit structure of the NHL and the salary cap. One year at a bargain for buffalo, retaining his rights and a chance for the market to reset for Sam. Or he goes to arbitration next year and walks to UFA after next year as a 25 goal 60 point winger in his prime.

Ok. I just think you could've had him on a deal with term for not a whole lot more than this. 55-60ish point guy on average over the last 3 years... A 6x6 or something in that area would've seemed reasonable to me. This gives him the chance to earn close to that this year and, if he crushes it, potentially demand a hefty raise next year. Having said that, avoiding arbitration is always good and he probably would've been awarded a bit more than this on a one/two year deal in that process, I just would've preferred a deal with term from the Sabres perspective if the dollar value on a one year was going to be this high.

If you were Sam would you want a 6x6 deal or 5x1 and then. 8x6 deal after playing with Hall and Eichel for a full season... I would say this is where he is at. Put up some big numbers and ask for more at a time when they are closer to the end of the Covid era

Perhaps, my assessment was a little short sighted lol. Just I feel like with the Sabres there's finally a bit of a vision coming into focus and I'd hope, if I were a Sabres fan, that he'd be a part of that. Another short term deal would be a little disappointing but if the team and player felt it was what was best, then by all means.....

I think it was pretty evident that I was looking at this from the Sabres point of view... I even mentioned in my comment the potential benefit of this deal for Reinhart that you pointed out, which is why I wouldn't be a huge fan of the deal from the Sabres perspective.

It was extremely evident. I was simply explaining why this is the reality so don’t go getting mad bud.

I disagree. He wants to prove himself, that's why he took a 2 year bridge in his last contract. He signed a 1 year deal and probably got less than the arbitrator would have given him. He is still RFA after this new deal and then we'll see where the cap situation is, if it's good lock him up long-term, if not, either a short-term deal or a trade. Adams is doing the right thing giving us max flexibility going forward, Dahlin and Eichel are the cornerstones of this franchise, not Reinhart, as much as I like him

Idk I just don't think you bridge him again if you're super high on him as a big part of the future. They bridged him after a 50 point season and he followed it up with 65 and 60* point seasons. He's been in Buffalo for half a decade now. They should have a good sense of what he is, and I think if they were huge fans of what he brings they would have locked him up to a long deal this year. You're probably giving him more on a long deal next year than your are this year.
