I believe these are the two scenarios the team is looking at.

In the event Ferland cant return to play this is likely what they do.

Ferland being on LTIR creates the cap space for the team to adress their biggest weakness which is RHD depth. They can either add one via trade or by claiming one off waivers at the start of the season, which is the more likely option IMO. Ferlands status will not be known until some point during camp which will be too late for the team to make a quality ufa signing. They can make their pick of the litter from the waivers crowd, or target certain players at a bargain.

Now lets discuss some dmen who fit the bill for the Canucks.

1. Justin Holl - With the Leafs cap crunch and new found D depth, Holl may become a cap casualty. I believe he would be at the top of the list of players to be targeted for trade once the team knows Ferland is out.

2. Luca Sbisa - Former Canuck Vegas expansion casualty. Possible waiver eligible pickup if the Jets young players force him out of a roster spot. Would be a short term stop gap extra dman for the Canucks.

3. Cody Ceci - Totally possible he gets waived with a poor performance in camp. Dont really want this player but it was rumoured Jim had called his camp while he was a ufa. Same story as Sbisa here IMO.

4. Derek Engellend - If the guy doesnt retire, maybe he signs a last minute deal with the team or even a PTO for camp. Or maybe he signs with a team as a depth piece and gets waived over a young player.
