Josh Leivo has signed a new contract with the Calgary Flames.

At this point, as a canucks fan, it's moreso funny. I don't think Leivo will be all too impactful here, but im glad he has a job. Flames are loading up on depth but their main issue is still their top 6 collapsing in key games. Nothing was done to fix that.

In general, the flames offseason is putting duct tape on the many holes of a sinking ship. GL Markstrom, Leivo, Tanev, Baker Domingue.

Man there are a lot of value contracts out there this year.

The bottom line is he's a competent NHLer who is better than an AHL tweener. He's a 3rd/4th line tweener with enough scoring to not look out of place in a top 6 for a game or two (not regularly) if injuries occur. Getting him for under 1 mil is a bargain. In a normal cap environment he's probably worth 1.75-2.25

Correction he's a clear third liner. His scoring rates hilariously are not far off Anderson (they are lower)

This is bizarre.. Calgary just loading up on Canuck UFAs. With the rumours from IMac saying the Canucks were trying to sign him I wonder why they couldnt agree to terms. Jims had some head shakers this offseason but has followed them up with something each time. Will be interesting to see what he does after this one..

Calgary picking up Canucks oldies, cause Benning is betting on the prospects to have bigger roles this year. Plus Canucks got a very good and underrated dman in Schmidt to fill in for tanev. Sad to see marky go, but the Holtby/Demko tandem has potential to be one of the better ones in the NHL.

Benning officially has lost the 2020 offseason and sure patched it a bit with schmidt and holtby but in general losing toffoli and levio at those contracts was a bad move.

Benning Benning you overpayed 4th liners and now its come back to bite you lul.

He chose Hawryluk for 75k less yikes.

The Leivo/Hawryluk numbers are very close per game. Hawryluk is also 3 years younger, any advantage one has the over the other is minimal at best.
Leivo's is just one of many value deals available at the bottom end of FA. Just no money to spend for most teams, and it will likely get worse next year.

We allowed Calgary to overpay Markstrom and Tanev. Stecher is overrated and is nothing more than a #6 guy.

Schmidt is a much better defenseman vs. Tanev - solves the most urgent need from last year of being desperate for a true top pair defenseman. The Holtby - Markstrom gap should close a bit next year.

Losing leivo at this cap is rough, but then again he hardly played, and likely wont be as impactful as the pre-injured version of himself. Toffoli did nothing for the success of the team last year.

VAN is fine. The stinging of overpaying depth a few years ago still exists, but its evident we have learned from mistakes and moved on.

I view him not overspending on anyone a massive W. I'm very glad the team went with a conservative route this offseason and I really doubt they will be any worse next year.

This signing is clear win for Flames and big L to Canucks, mostly due to salary.

Would have been a Canuck, but there wasn't room in the budget for Benning to give him too much money, and he sure doesn't do value signings.
