Description

Sandin, Lehtonen and Liljegren are all waivers exempt, so they can alternate between the Marllies and the Maple Leafs; so are Barabanov. Engvall, Korshkov and even Hallander.

Los Angeles elects to protect Iafallo, Kempe, Kerfoot and Kopitar; Doughty (NMC), Clague. Walker and Roy; and Petersen in the expansion draft.

The result: a roster with flexibility and cap space.

Toronto protects the top 6 plus Lizotte, the top 2 plus Muzz, and Campbell. Robertson, Lehtonen and Liljegren are all exempt.

If the Kings acquired Kerfoot, they wouldn't protect him. They don't intend to protect Lizotte either.

If there wasn't a flat cap or financial uncertainty this year, I would say that the Kings would consider this trade. However, with the flat cap, and due to the fact that Kerfoot isn't a significant upgrade over Lizotte, the Kings would opt to keep the less expensive player.

I really like this idea, but I don’t think this gets it done for LA.

I get the premise, but I'm not on board with the result at all as a Leafs fan. They're paying what could end up being a pretty significant price to downgrade in talent just to be able to carry an extra bottom of the lineup player or two... Not a fan. If they were to use that extra cap to improve the roster elsewhere, I'd be much more receptive to downgrading from Kerfoot, but otherwise they'd be better off just keeping him... At least for now.
