Remove every player drafted, signed or traded for after those 3 picks. Also every every trade after those 3 picks and see what the roster looks like

Look again. Zboril, DeBrusk, and Senyshyn were good at the time, it’s just that they didn’t turn out with Boston that’s all. It’s hard to do these kinds of things and say “that was a good pick” then look 5 years later and be like “they should’ve never picked him, he is a bust now”, and “look at that Connor, Barzal etc. got picked after. We should’ve picked them”. You never would’ve known they were gonna turn out the way they did, not saying that they are busts.

This is pretty much what major public scouts were thinking at the time:

It was known Boston had a weird list going in and it was widely seen as stupid at the time by anyone who knew what they were talking about. Stop trying to retcon history.

Barzal, Connor, and Chabot were the consensus picks at the time, I recall it very clearly. Islanders even traded up for Barzal, they probably thought there was zero chance of him still being available. Boston dropped the ball hard.

True but at 13,14 and 15 that’s reckless, and they paid the price. But teams that have multiple picks in the 1st rd do have a tendency to swing for the fences with one of them.

Exactly I just want to say one more thing. Look at Detroit for an example. Off the board with Seider.

He was a 4th liner in junior when they drafted him.

It was an obviously bad pick the second he made it.

All three of those picks were reached even at the time. Barzal and Connor were seen as condenses top 10 picks. In fact, Connor was a arguably a top 5 guy going in (which explains the Connor vibes when talking about perfetti) who fell.

Senyshyn was the biggest reach (projected late 20’s guy), zboril wasn’t that much of a reach but still one (projected early 20’s/late teens) while debrusk was the safe pick (was consenses top 15).

There is no justifying what happened at that draft, Boston dropped the ball really hard

Lots of comments, I’ve only read to this one I’m quoting so far.

I remember the Zboril choice was considered within reason of where he should be chosen, the DeBrusk choice was considered too early, and the Senyshyn choice was considered well off the board, so I agree mostly. Not a good trifecta.

If Barzal and Connor were consensus top 10 picks, how where they even available when Boston picked first at #13?

Barzal was ranked anywhere from 6th to 18th by some
Connor was ranked anywhere from 7th to 24th by some

Both guys were projected to be mid-teens picks the draft. As for the picks Boston made, Zboril wasn't a reach and went around where many thought he would. He was also ranked higher than Chabot. DeBrusk was a early/mid 20's pick, so a slight reach but not much. Seny was the biggest reach as he was slotted somewhere between 40-50 in the draft.
