it didn't have to be detroit any team could do... i just thought of a team that needed him and i thought detroit... you guys kind of need everything. sincerely i'm pretty surprised on how every trade i make with detroit, wings fans say things like we don't need this and that. also in this case riikola is a good LD with some upside still and on a cheap deal probably with the talent to almost play in your top 4.

Detroit needs high end talent pretty much everywhere. Riikola is a 26 year old 3rd pairing D. There's not much upside left, if any at all. Detroit picked up a player of similar caliber in Jon Merrill for $925K.
I'm not opposed to Riikola on the Wings, but 3rd pairing guys are available every year in free agency, and they're cheap. No sense in paying draft picks for something you can get for cash only.

I'd say he is a 4 or a 5 at least on Detroit that is where he'd be. It really doesn't matter because Detroit acquired a few defensemen through trades and free agency.and they have couple prospects that are almost ready to make the jump. So they really don't need any more defensemen right now. Before free agency and switch the 3rd for a 4th or a 5th I could see this happening.
