Need to acquire a Severson without using Pionk to do it, that 2nd pair is not good.

I agree with @MisstheWhalers it's pointless to trade one good defenseman for another. It just keeps the Jets in the same place

Severson can play with Morrissey on the first line. Pionk can't. That is the difference.

Not if you want a good top pairing he can't. Severson is a decent second pair guy with limited offense. So, not an upgrade.

Severson has similar offensive numbers to Morrissey. Is Morrissey not a top guy?
Not all about offense. Severson gives size and all around ability.

I feel like the Jets are just one top 4 LHD away from being competitive.
JMo/DD is a good pairing (not a true #1 pairing, but good) and if someone like Vatanen or Hamonic could play with Pionk, that’s two solid pairings that can handle 45 mins a game between the 4 of them.
One of Hamonic/Vatanen on a one year deal could be perfect. A placeholder until Heinola/Samberg are ready for NHL mins, no need to protect for Seattle.
Plus a one year contract for these UFA’s that are left, in this economic climate, would likely be a good idea.

Winnipeg should play Heinola as allot of people think he is ready. Samberg gets a shot but if he needs more time then Beaulieu or Forbort can step in.

Don't know what is happening with Hamonic but he would of been a suitable partner with Heinola

Severson is solid offensively! Ideally he is a #2 or #3 ... but square-pegged into #1, all situations, role for NJD as their best d-man. Probably a 45-pt d-man with WPG.

Problem is it creates too big a hole for NJD.

The problem I see with this trade and most defense addition ideas for the Jets in general is if you trade Pionk for a better RHD to pair with Morrissey like is done here for Severson then DeMelo slides down to the 2nd pair but then the Jets don't have a quality LHD like a H.Lindholm to make DeMelo a passable 2nd pair RHD.

In other threads I've seen it's make a big trade like one of the young wingers for a Pulock for example and put Pulock on the 2nd pairing to have two strong pairings but then Pionk is moving up to the top pairing and he and Morrissey are just too small to be paired together which is also why I don't see Morrissey-DeMelo as a number one D pair, DeMelo is also too slow imo.

So no matter what I think this team is short two top 4 dmen and at the very least they need one more true top 4 dman cause as of right now if one of Morrissey or Pionk gets injured for any extended period of time the season is gonna go south in a hurry.

I think a 2nd pair of Forbort-Pionk will be fine but if Pionk gets hurt then what, I think he can compliment Pionk's game but Forbort isn't carrying a D pairing.

As for the two young guys Heinola and Samberg I just don't know if either should be counted on to log top 4 minutes already and as good as Heinola looked in his 8 games I really worry how he'll make out in playoff hockey.

The remaining dmen of Beaulieu, Poolman, Sbisa in any configuration will make a solid 3rd pair and I'd have faith in them moving into the top 4 in a pinch for a game or two but none of them would be long term options if anyone is out long term. I think Niku is done with the organization, even though I like him I just don't see him as a factor, hope he lands on his feet with some team that'll give him a chance.

With all that said the Jets have 7 dmen under contract, one RFA dman to sign in Niku but like I said I think he's not coming back and they have two prospects that seem like they both have a good chance to make the team but with 7 dmen under contract where do they fit, I highly doubt that Forbort or Sbisa signed with the Jets to be veteran dmen on the Manitoba Moose.

As much as I'd like to see another top 4 dman brought in or Hamonic signed for a year unless there's a big trade I wonder if they're not done tinkering with this
D core.

Well said. Heinola offensive abilities can replace Pionk on the 2nd line. Hamonic would be a better partner than DeMelo.

End of the day, a team needs to compare to past cup champs, obviously the monsters that can do it all don’t grow on trees, and if jets plan on going forward with heinola, morrissey, and pionk, there’s going to be one large demand for samberg to be one of the monsters to do it all, but definitely one hundred percent missing a couple more, not to say they both have to be top pairing money and one could be added on budget like the one year wonders you hear about every year. Ie bogo this year. But damn do we need a monster rhd or lhd in the worst way for going forward, monsters with a edge please. Sergachev is my request lol
