I too a stab at Tampa Bay's cap issues. And, well, I got them under $81.5 million, but took a meat cleaver to their roster. Sorry, guys...best I got.

Let me know what you think?
(not that anyone reads the comments anymore, they skip to the trades say, "my team laughs in your face"..."my gm hangs up the phone")
I agree. The bolts are about to be screwed over (by trade of offer sheet) BAD. Expect them to be unable to match a Sergachev offer sheet for 6 mil, giving them only a first and 3rd, and then pay that first to dump Johnson or something.
Butcher doesn't get you Sergachev, Let alone Sergachev at 8 years $52 million and Tyler Johnson first off there's absolutely noway that Tyler Johnson waives his full NTC for a bottom feeding club like the Devils.

The salaries I got directly from Evolving Hockey. So not my figure.
I have no idea where Johnson would waive to (your guess is as best as mine)
The trade was for Sergachev AND Johnson. Most of Serg's value is wiped out by swallowing TJ. What's left is comparable to Butcher (I also considered Dunn, Nurse, Pettersson, Pionk, others).
The problem is Boston has 2 big holes to fill and enough cap space to fix only one. They are not in position to retain. They have to move out some dead cap as it is.
They're going to buy TJ out and then trade one of Killorn/Palat. I think they get it done without something like this.
Current: $78.6 million
Sergachev: +$5.0 million
Cirelli: +$5.0 million
Cernak: +$2.0 million
-Killorn -$4.45 million
-TJ: -$2.27 million (net after buyout) Total: $83.88 million
(and if they go any lower on Cirelli and Sergachev, they will lose them via offer-sheet)

Got it...thought they had some space to play with.

I don't think Devs fans expect that do happen, at least I don't!
Serg has value and we should pay a fair (albeit discounted in a way) amount.
Butcher is not a Bolts type D man, yes offensive but his size and skating are just opposite of that. Smith is similar to Butcher. Reilly Walsh is a rook but more to their liking and a righty. I see one of our picks last year or so as a piece going back, maybe Bahl. I think a protected 1st (top 3 maybe) our 2nd from Isles and things like this as options. Is Palat a better for from Tampas sake on the contract coming back.

No, I don't this trade will happen either. I think Sergachev will sign an offer sheet, and Johnson will be dumped, and cost way more to dump than we thought he would, a second at least, maybe more. Mark my words. Something has to give, But ya, the value in that trade doesn't line up.

These trades are so difficult to value. TB fans will say that TJ should return a high pick or prospect. Others will say TB should pay to move him. In this case, this deal took that latter position. And TB has zero leverage other than buying out players.

Neither comp is great, but I'd say Smith is more similar to Sergachev than to Butcher. Butcher is more offensive, puck-mover. Smith is more two-way player. While Smith is NHL-ready, Bahl probably isn't for a year. And while doing Smith, 1st, 2nd for Sergachev would be find deal, it would mean TJ not dumped in deal.

I guarentee you TJ will not fetch postive return. You know why? No team would take him for free when the bolts put him on waivers.

I agree with you. Thats why the trade above looks the way it does. Its Sergachev (++) and Johnson (-) for Butcher (+).
The argument can be had whether Serg is (++) or (+++) or whether Butcher is (+) or (++) or whatever. But no argument about whether TJ is (+) or (-). I think your point about TJ on waviers supports that. The question is whether TJ is (-) or (--) is really the unknown here.
