So you think Toffoli, Drouin, Tatar, or Anderson will want to play on the third? In my opinion your greatly mistaken if you think they will want to.

If Toffoli wasn’t ok with playing on the “third line” he wouldn’t have signed here. There’s no difference between the first and third lines. This isn’t Edmonton, Toronto, or Pittsburgh where there’s a massive drop off from line 2 to 3. And if a player is worried about not getting enough ice time, that’s the cost of winning, since all good teams have players that could be getting more ice time on other teams.

Habs fans are half the problem. That’s the problem with large fanbases, the larger the fanbase, the more idiots there are.

I mean, something has to give on that right side. They have caufield coming up. And toffoli, anderson, and gally. Toffoli can shift to lw for now but what happens when caufield comes up?

To be clear I’m not saying he will be traded (cause I don’t see that happening), but just food for thought

All I’m saying is, if you place one of them on the third line, then you could see either a player not resigning, or a trade request. If I was a good top 6 winger like these guys are, I wouldn’t want to play third line when you could play second, or maybe first.

Armia is probably gone, especially since Ylönen will take his spot pretty soon. And Caufield could switch to LW, although that is unlikely.

The goal is to have 3 lines that can score... Theres no 1st or 3rd lines with this lineup and the players know it. Some lines may have more ice time depending on the game theyre playing (and intengibles such as PK or PP).

I mean I wasn’t even considering ylonen or armia cause I don’t see both of them as legitimate top 6 options for at least the next few years

Fair enough. I just wouldn’t want to be a third liner, if you are actually a top 6 winger anyway. I can see one of them not resigning or requesting a trade.

Again, there is no difference between what you call the “first line” or the “third line”. No matter what they’re playing with a very talented centre and another good winger. All the top 3 lines get rolled, and everyone gets around the same amount of even strength ice time. So it makes no difference what line a player is on.

You can’t look at the habs as constructed with a “top 6” more of a “top 9”. So (assuming Toffoli plays LW) our top 3 RW this year are Gallagher, Anderson, & Armia. Next year Armia walks, and Caufield takes his place. Then Ylönen can take over Armia’s role as a 2-way RW, and maybe later he moves up the lineup and Caufield switches to LW.

As kotkaniemi15 just said, as long as those top 6 wingers are playing with great players, they wont consider themselves underused or whatever

It is proven fact in the nhl that 3 “top six” lines don’t work. There will always be a top line that gets the most minutes then a 2nd. 3 scoring lines is proven not to work. Idk, like most years in the past, the Canadiens still lack a top end talent.

Almost every team that has had success recently has had 3 good lines. Sure some teams have more high end players than others (Tampa Bay for instance) but you can’t tell me that the 2019 St. Louis Blues had the type of player that the habs can’t or won’t have in the future. Having depth and good goaltending goes a long way in the playoffs.
