gm of the year went to the wrong person

LOU deserved this ****. He screwed over the leafs with the Marleau and Zaitsev signings. Passed on Hart during the draft among other players (Debrincat). This is revenge for that and it feels good. Keep the losses coming.

i don't have ill will against lou. he was able to do what burke wish he'd done: right the ship in a reasonable amount of time.

but i'm glad dubas is the gm over him.

Shedding salary this season has been more difficult than most expected. The Islanders having to trade Toews for picks feels like there was real offer sheet concerns. A team could have offered up to $4.25M without having the compensation go above a 2nd, so getting two 2nds sounds like the Islanders get a better return than they would have (as they felt they couldn't match an offer in that range) and Colorado gets to negotiate a contract that is a little more favorable.

Toews is worth more than two 2nds, and it doesn't look great to have to let this player go for a below market return because of some of the money spent on depth in recent years. So Colorado wins this deal pretty easily.

Love it. I guess Byram gets another development year

That’s why teams with the best GMs are always noticeable. They’re either going really far in the playoffs or dazzling people with their prospects.

Well NYI get high draft picks for the future and move out a player from a position of strength they have. Colorado gets the NHL ready player. Kind of a wash for both ends.

At the end of the off-season, I'm going to post a question in the Forums: "What Was the Worst Trade of the Off-Season?" and this trade and the Nate Schmidt one are going to be choices.

The only time I saw him play was at the WJC. He didn't look close to NHL ready. But a lot can happen in a year.

So with this and the likely Pietrangelo signing with Vegas, it’s inevitable that we’re going to see a Vegas vs. Colorado western conference final now.

Joke’s on me, there was no western conference. But they did play each other, and they also both made it the farthest out of the teams that are usually in the west, so I was right enough.

Everyone knew this deal would be bad for the isles at the time of the trade and it’s now even worse than before. Lou is a terrible gm, has not one a single trade he’s made for the islanders

Just to add a thought. It looks like the Isles made the trade cause they needed the cap. How did they spend the 4.25m that was freed up by trading Toews Now if they spent that cap wisely...maybe the deal isn't so bad. But the fact that Isles are sitting at home, and Avs have been good team for the past two years...sure looks like Avs have better cap management.

Yep cause if I remember correctly didnt Boychuck retire a week later and go on LTIR

Should have just waited then they could have kept him

Or heck dump Leddy on a team to make the space

But it seemed Lou had other priorities

The idea of adding “cap space” is so overrated it drives me crazy. The fact that the isles added 4 mil in cap space does not justify this trade at all. Because they could have traded other players like Leddy, Komarov or Bailey to clear that cap.

Well you have to go back to the time of the trade and so what the Isles cap space was. Right or wrong, if the cap was too tight they had make decision on who to keep. But you're right they had other options. Not sure if it was the same season, but they did resign their captain Lee to 7m X 7 year contract after a career year. Maybe he was the guy to go.

Leafs very well might have the same decision this summer. If it felt that a 5m goalie is needed, sure looks like Nylander has to be traded with no cap being returned. And you can be sure if it's a pick or two or prospects, Nylander's trade value won't be as high as his on ice value. Just too many sellers of cap and not enough buyers.

I understand that because of the cap situation, someone had to go. But this trade was bad from day one and it got worse as Toews established himself as a top pair defenseman. You mention Lee: he might not have been the one to go (since he is the captain). Why not part with Leddy a year early? Komarov and Hickey? Or they could have traded Bailey, or not added Pageau, etc.. But trading a top 4 d man in his prime who had potential to improve and not even get a first round pick is terrible any way you cut it.

In a similar sense, trading Nylander, a guy who is coming off an 80 point season, for less than a first round pick and a solid prospect, or a equal value player at a different position, would be a huge mistake. Trading Nylander for 2 2nds would be a huge mistake. If they are trading Nylander, it needs to be for a first plus prospect or another equal value player.

Komarov had a NTC. It had to be someone with a mid sized contract. Again not sure of when the trade and made and who was on the roster. Certainly 5m Pageau for a third line centre was a mistake

The Islanders didn’t have to trade Toews , they chose to. Trotz wanted Leddy on the team over Toews, the isles even had offers for Leddy that offseason. They could have easily kept him.

I just think with so many teams close the cap trading a 7m player that expecting a 1st and prospect isn't really that practical. And a player of equal value.....that's OK if it helps the Leafs in position of need.

That's why I think the more likely trade for Nylander might be for just two second rounders. Then they have the cap to sign a position of need.

So what do think is better: Nylander and 2m goalie on the team. or. a 5,25m goalie, plus 3.75m in cap to replace Nylander and two seconds round picks? IMO the 5.25m goalie and the 3.75m RWer is better on ice value for the Leafs next season
