Description
Ok, so I thought that the Jimmy Vesey sweepstakes ended a long time ago but i guess it has been extended for a limited time for a year. Ok so i dont see any reason why Mikhayev and Dermott won't be signed by this team by the end of this week.I believe that the league may impose a rule due to the AHL possibly not being opened for this year that teams can hold or scratch more players from their roster and remain cap compliant while doing so? so instead of the traditional 23 man roster it might be bumped to thirty if need be and i believe Dubas is the type of GM that would immediately take advantage of the rule thus the Jimmy Vesey contact. Decent guy and former Hobey Baker Winner in the NCAA. 6 foot 3 inch 207lb frame to stay true to Dubas's promise of being tougher to play against. The thing that worries me is the consistency. Last year, Vesey had 20 pts in 64 games while the year before he had 35 pts in 81 games. so there is still a potential there for Vesey to find his consistency and i bet the Leafs will use everything within their disposal to bring it out. Kerfoot and Vesey used to play together at Harvard so it wouldnt surprise me if Vesey was placed on the 3rd line as a cheaper option to what Mangoes ( Johnsson ) was? I know i will get flack for leaving out Robertson out of the lineup considering dude is a legit superstar in the making but i believe the Leafs will try to make him strengthen his game a bit to ensure he is completely ready for the NHL so it doesn't necessarily mean that the Leafs need to immediately burn another year of his contract but Vesey might be a year long placeholder until Robertson completely rounds up his game. Barabanov is on the RW some people gave me heck for that too in my previous two builds. So if you think there are better deals the Leafs can make, comment down below I'd love to hear them! been a huge fan of this team for 20 years and love to hear other people's opinion

Thanks mate! I'm unsure about the extras/scratches and how the league is going to allow teams to fool around with that regarding the possible closure of the AHL for a season? It makes you wonder what exactly we don't know and what these Gm's do know about the NHL next season. This is why the Vesey deal is really interesting to me right now!

Very true! In 2018/19 he had 35 pts in 81 games with the Rangers one year but took a step backward in Buffalo ( Go figure it is in Buffalo ) 64 games 20pts. I think Dubas sees something we don't or clearly something that I haven't at all or am missing? if Vesey can hit 40pts for the first time in his career, then it's a successful signing for sure. Dubas is continuing to look for diamonds in the rough and it worked out with guys like Mikhayev and Spezza. so time will tell

How would a 30-man roster work? Does the cap increase?

Probably not no cap increase, they would not count against cap i would guess until theyre in the starting line up

Ah that's actually not a bad idea, but I think the AHL will come back. If junior hockey can do it I bet the AHL can too

That's the thing I wouldn't exactly know how? It seems like a messy process or maybe the league sets a bar that the teams can operate say 6% above the cap ( which would be 700k per player if you added an extra 7 guys to the 23 man roster ) but only if that is needed? maybe Dubas finds or gives a team a guy like an Engvall or Dermott in exchange for an LTIR and if he can operate 6% above the roster but only add 4 extra guys that'll give him say 2.8 mil to operate above plus the LTIR. idk but i still think dubas has something up his sleeve

Where the full fishbowl helmets and it will work but AHL markets some teams make their ends meet due to ticket sales and not TV rights like the NHL. so it seems pointless to do so, same goes for the OHL or QMJHL

Some teams don't have the financial support like a Toronto, Montreal, New York Rangers, etc. the league would have to step in and bail out some teams
