Description

Losing Tanev and Marky in one day hurts...and to Calgary, tough. But this could still work out good. And so far Benning hasnt made any really longterm stupid signings (though I think Holtby contract size is suspect). Currently there is just under 8mil in contract space and we now need a top right defense. Ferland may still be LTIR, though I would love if he played too (healthy) I would rather have him on LTIR. For now, assume he plays or at least counts against the cap. We also have to sign" Gaudette, Virtanen, CHatfield, Brisebois, Justin Bailey and Jake Keilly. And fill a few holes in Utica too.

Why didn't Benning buyout Rousell or Sutter or Baertschi or Benn...Eriksson is everything-proof, except for suck.
Maybe next year after the draft(s) they buyout Eriksson and save the team $2mil. Anyways...

I think Joulevi gets the 3rd LD spot but i think Rathbone maybe gets a look into the season. Hoglander likely plays in Eurpoe on loan and comes in towards the end of the season. Lind gets some NHL looks. Tryamkin is having a good year so far and could maybe still come in and play on the RD for a manageble amount (though I doubt it).

I think Rafferty can slot in on the 3rd pairing as an option and definitely at least as the first call up. But, what if Benning offer sheet for Cernak and/or then signed UFA Bogosian?

Because buying out any of those contracts will not save much cap space. Particularly, buying out baertschi or benn adds cap hit to next year where the real cruch will be.

I think Virtanen get's closer to 3M unless its a 1 year deal.

I agree with the general sentiment of what your saying. Losing 2/3 of our key UFAs to a divisional rival is tough to see. Something has got to give and they have to get something done on defense. We don't have much cap space and Benning said he can't shed any cap, so I'm not sure how its going to work. I think its becoming more and more likely that we take a step back for next year and prepare to re-sign Pettersson and Hughes.

Ferland being on LTIR is a key variable I guess we'll have to wait for. Its very tough to plan around. I just don't understand why we're being cap conscious with Markstrom and Tanev after already signing Myers, Roussel, Beagle, etc. to big contracts.

Cernak at 4.3 instead of 4.5 changes compensation from a 1st and 3rd to a 2nd. If Benning is actually smart enough to accomplish this I will completely change my thought process on the guy and start to forgive him a little bit for all there terrible contracts he has given out previously
