I don't follow the Hawks too closely, but in terms of their rebuild, this makes sense to me.
Who is the long-term starter in Chicago?
I think it's too early to say that either Delia or Lankinen are worthy of the role, and I think Subban's resume has more-or-less automatically relegated him into the career backup role. Signing Crawford, Greiss, or whoever - even on a short-term deal - basically eliminates any chance of observing both men in an NHL role this season. This is not a team expected to make the playoffs, never mind win the cup. Last season was a treat, but it's back to reality here: the Blackhawks management is doing the right thing by taking stock of what they currently have. If they're intelligent about it, they can use Lankinen's waiver eligibility to split starts among all three goaltenders.
Commesso is - at best - 3 to 5 years away from an NHL role. There's a chance that the Blackhawk's management might be looking at a name like Wallstedt in next year's draft should they acquire an additional 1st round pick (probably 2 years away from an NHL role tbh). There's a pool of young goaltenders that may become available next season.
Right now, this is the transitory "what do we have" that each rebuilding team ends up in when the franchise is close to being ready to graduate its prospects. This, to me at least, was inevitable.
