I read this and all i could think was darcy regier. He was the poster boy for the low risk move. The low risk move gets you 17 years.
Tim Murray was shoot from the hip.
Both his mouth and trades.
Look what that gave us with O'Reilly, Lehner and Kane on the team:
Second last in the Atlantic.
Last in the Atlantic.
Last over all.
Regier did not have any scouts yet his Hasek led team made it to the cup finals and his Miller led team won the Presidents cup.
BTW his 2006 team wins the cup if we did not have to play 4 AHL defensemen in the finals.
Steve Yzerman traded away a first only twice with big trades:
Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller February 26, 2018 for Vladislav Namestnikov, Libor Hajek, Brett Howden, 2018 1st round pick and 2019 conditional 2nd round pick
and Braydon Coburn March 2, 2015 for Radko Gudas, 2015 1st round pick, and 2015 3rd round pick
He got firsts for Kyle Quincey and Martin St. Louis, in both cases he won the trades overwhelmingly.
He was certainly slow and steady.
So I completely agree with your description of Regier, it is the better path to follow.
Give me slow and steady to win the race.
The hare gets tired and finishes last.
