Confirmed worst goalie tandem in the NHL this year...at least right now. But goalies are ultra-weird. Sometimes the most head-scratching tandems all of a sudden turn into competent ones within a flash. Therefore, not a bad piece of work to get a low-risk tandem guy for a year at 50% retained.

Wow this is not great value at all for Minnesota. Lost two trades to the same team in one day. I thought they could get a 2nd for Donato and a 4th for Dubnyk with retention

Makes sense. Sharks wanted someone short term, veteran for a competitive yet transitional season. Greiss, Holtby etc are looking for multi year deals. The retention makes it easier to swallow and getting a 7 th back is solid. Maybe Jones and Dubby have resurgent years and it works out. Only time will tell. With Melnichuk expected to arrive next year this makes sense.

Goalies are super mercurial.

I think that part of it is because so much of being a good goalie is mental rather than physical. You can have all of the reflexes and size characteristics necessary to do the job, but even a little bit of bad positioning, coaching, or (most often) a pure mental block can make said goalie's entire game collapse.

This isn’t as bad as it could’ve been. If he works out, then San Jose gets a good goalie for cheap. If he doesn’t work out, it’s only a 5th. Minnesota gets $2M in cap space plus moves up 2 rounds. Fair trade.

While I completely agree that going after dubnyk is mind boggling and kinda revolting, it’s a fair value deal. good value wise for the sharks as it costs near nothing even if I don’t like going after dubnyk. If we take into account the Donato deal as a consideration its:

dubnyk (50%) Donato 7th -> 3rd 5th

Which is actually very good for the sharks.

I also think the sharks management see it as either:
A) Dubnyk and Jones get us a lottery pick
B) Dubnyk bounces back/ has a higher ceiling then Dell or other 2 mil goalie targets

Nabokov really improved Jones’ game near the end of the year. He’s still not where he was 3 years ago but it’sa small bit of optimism that sharks fans need. Maybe he’ll spark dubnyk too. We can only wait and see, as a long time sharks fans i have to find optimism which is tough after last year

Unpopular opinion:

I don't think MIN "lost" either trade with San Jose.

Donato didn't and won't get top 6 minutes in Minnesota, Dubnyk's value was roughly the same as a bag of pucks, so the fact that we didn't have to buy him out and even got a pick for him is huge IMO.

I think SJ takes the W here, but it's not exactly because they made a good trade but rather because MIN made a not-so-good deal...

Bill Guerin desperately trying to get much younger and rebuild the team. Been a couple years coming. Ownership I guess has finally been convinced that a rebuild is required.

Stalock & Kähkönen are the two goalies going forward with Stalock being the one exposed in next summers Expansion Draft.

Kick the can down the line a year for the rebuild in San Jose, Dubnyk didn't do to well last year with a decent defense and is aging so I doubt he'll rebound but it is 50% salary retained so Sharks still do okay. Considering what the Wild gave up to get Dubnyk Brendan Warren 3rd round pick in 2015 not a huge loss by them either to just move on one year ahead of schedule.

Reminds me of when Raanta and Kuemper were first paired together.

I think this trade is terrible for the Sharks. DD was worse than terrible last season on a very good defensive team. Now, he's gonna be on a terrible defensive team. I expect his numbers to flatline and the Sharks will be at the bottom of the Pacific standings again.

How anyone can say Minnesota lost this trade is beyond me. They gained $2m in cap space and a roster spot for a goalie that might be able to stop a puck every once in awhile and got to move up 2 rounds in the draft. They retained salary because they won't need that cap space this year, so it does absolutely nothing to hurt them. SJ got a buy low goalie who if he can bounce back, could be decent and if not, they weren't doing much this year anyhow. Definition of a fair trade where both teams got what they needed. Some people... lol

fair deal. San Jose gets a backup for cheap and Minnesota gets rid of Dubnyk without having to buy him out
