Says the fan of a team that's had 2 #1 picks in the last 4 years and nothing to show for it.

Dude I'm not a Devils fan tears of joy

I'm in the GM Game and my team is the Devils, so I made Hischier my profile picture.

I'd still pick the Devils over the Wild to cheer for though. At least they have the groundwork of a young and talented core.

So Minny turned Charlie Coyle into a 2021 3rd and Cade Webber...wow!

Just to revisit some of those comments from the BOS/MIN trade:

Boston gave up too quickly on Donato

not as much as donato should have fetched

Boston overpaid

Donato’s long term potential where he could at least match, and likely exceed, Coyle’s production.

Cade Webber? Carolina drafter Webber.

We didn't draft Webber, Carolina did. We moved that pick so we could draft Hunter Jones last year.

Was just looking at the trade details from the MIN/BOS trade. Didn't say anything about them sending the pick to CAR, just that Webber was chosen with the pick.

Still doesn't change the fact that Minny got bent over in the trade.

He’s 24, has played one full (pandemic shortened) season, and has gotten better every year. Why would this be a player you move out?

This was is 2nd "full season" in reality. His rookie year he started in Boston, was demoted to Providence and then traded to Minny

24 year old, 14 goal scorer (without superstar linemates) and earns $1.9M... do we still think Dubas could get a 3rd round pick for Johnsson "easily"?

Donato on a line with Hertl and Kane would really boost his numbers. We may have found a 20-25 goal scorer for our top six. If not he’ll settle in nicely as a 3rd line secondary scorer. Not much to dislike here. Glad DW still has his trade power.

I don't see him becoming a consistent top top six Forward at any point. I think his ceiling is somewhere around 15G and 35 points. That being said, I still think thus trade is fair for both sides.

And we traded Brent Burns for Coyle+. The trickle down effect of letting Burns go looks awful if you follow the trail.

Another illustration of the principle that sometimes the best trade is the one you dont make... AGMs is full of examples🤣

To me a good deal for the Sharks. Gets a player that you play at the NHL level for a pick 3/4 years away.

Very cheap price for a versatile center that the Sharks desperately need. Good trade for SJS.

As a Wild fan, I'm not sure if the Wild know what the Wild are doing. Hopefully, there's a plan?

Mandatory reminder that MiN gave up Coyle for Donato. What a disastreous trade...

Good morning,

I have a question for anyone who's been watching Donato.
How is he only worth a 3rd round pick in next years draft?
I thought his value would close to someone like Kapanen?

Ryan Donato:
- Drafted = 2014
- Position = C + LW
- Cap Hit = $1,900,000
- Expires = RFA in 1 year
- Career = 130 NHL games
- Points = 0.44 per game
- Goals = 0.24 per game

Kaspari Kapanen:
- Drafted = 2014
- Position = RW only
- Cap Hit = $3,200,000
- Expires = RFA in 2 years
- Career = 200 NHL games
- Points = 0.44 per game
- Goals = 0.20 per game

Ignorant Conclusion:
- They're the same age and both have RFA expiry
- They have the same career points per game
- Donato has a better career goals per game
- Donato plays a more valuable position
- Donato has a significantly lower salary

How does that translate into the following trade values?

Ryan Donato:
- Round 3 pick = 078th overall (estimate)

Kaspari Kapanen:
- Round 1 pick = 015th overall (upcoming)
- Round 2 pick = 058th overall (Filip Hallander)
- Round 7 pick = 200th overall (Rodrigues value)

I'm assuming Toronto got better value than Minnesota.
But can someone please explain what I'm missing?
Is there some glaring flaw in Donato's game?

To be fair:

Dubas did just get a 1st + 2nd for Kapanen.
Kapanen and Donato are the same age and have nearly identical career goals and points per game.

So ya probably.

I feel like if you look at the Donato trade as a precursor to the Dubnyk trade, it makes a lot more sense. (Although I do think we sold a little low on Donato, he wasn't going to get the top 6 time he needs to shine IMO, and there was apparently attitude rumors? I can't verify that one.) If you look at both trades together as one it becomes:

To San Jose: Devan Dubnyk (50% salary retention) + Donato + 2022 7th Round pick
To Minnesota: 2021 3rd Round Pick, 2022 5th round pick

This value seems a little bit better to me, but still a bit of a low sell. Dubnyk was abysmal last year, and the Wild were able to get out of his contract without a buyout.

As for Kapanen, in my opinion, the Pens overpaid for him with that 1st included in the deal, especially at 15OA in a deep draft, so the slight underpay for Donato due to Dubnyk and the slight overpay for Kapanen makes that difference seem a lot larger.

Just my 2 cents!

He probably could match production of Coyle just not on Boston, or Minnesota. Maybe on San Jose who knows, but I still felt like Coyle for Danato was a win for Boston in the long-run.

Well then shoot I guess by your logic Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, and the rest of the entire Toronto core isn't groundwork for a talented core either I mean they can't even get passed 1 round right?

You’ve listed two cores.

One includes a franchise center, two top wingers, and a top D-man.

The other includes two top wingers, and a bunch of middle six forwards.

Notice the difference?
