Description
I've been reading rumors about Arizona wanting to move Ekman-Larsson and that he'd only waive his NMC for Vancouver or one other team, so I thought I would take a look and see how well he fits the Canucks.

This doesn't seem a particularly good match to me. It means giving up on Toffoli, Tanev and Markstrom, and even after doing some bottom-feeding among free-agent forwards, I don't think that the bottom 6 has been improved.

The team is still clean for the expansion draft, and there is still $14.625 million coming off the books in 2021 to sign Pettersson and Hughes, but I'm not sure that this is a step in the right direction for Vancouver. (Maybe if Gaudette was replaced by another defense prospect?) What do Canucks fans think?

Yeah, it's tough to pinpoint his trade value. I just got tired of seeing Eriksson or Sutter or Baertschi included in a bunch of these constructions.

Its pretty simple. Zona is either desperate to move him and does it to save money, forget assets or they don't move him. It wont work unless hes dealt for pennies on the dollar, Vancouver cant afford him with Petey and Hughes up next year for max term and max dollars. OEL would have to have money retained or it's a step backwards for Vancouver. If the Yotes move him it wont be for much. Leverage is at zero. They need to dump OEL or Keller. They don't want to pay OEL 10.5 million in salary starting in 2021 so you see where these rumours about OEL became a reality.

This construction shows that they can sign Pettersson long-term for $9 million and Hughes intermediate-term for $6 million.

Isn’t the other team he’d waive for Boston? BOS has $14.5M under the cap with only RFAs DeBrusk and Grzelcyk to sign.

I think they both go 8x10.They'll want max term and they deserve it. After Eichel max term and the dollars Matthews received. Theres no way they sign that low! They both have nothing to prove. I don't see the landscape changing anything for the rich much like in society the rich will be paid no matter the circumstances. Guys like Petro and Hall are gonna get their money. Toffoli although the rumours have a 5 million contract are out there. That is hard to believe

Yeah, I couldn't remember and didn't want to veer off. Maybe I'll try my luck there. But guys like @bhavikp27 and @Bcarlo25 and @Gofnut999 will savage me no matter what trade I make for him.

Nah, i don’t want the contract. But as long as it’s reasonable we’re good. When you make it 1st, Debrusk, Carlo then i’ll tear into you. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was thinking of two prospects like Steen and Vaakanainen/Lauzon plus the 2021 first.

Not really. Not if you just use logic.
Like, “hmmmm, they’re likely losing a couple d men, they probably won’t trade Carlo, let’s use Debrusk instead.”
Or “hmmmm their top two centers are really old, they probably won’t trade Studnicka, let’s use Vaakainanen instead.”

Not that hard.

Seriously, it’s not that hard to make trades that aren’t crazy.

Look at how many teams are going to be able to make a legit offer: in this case, it’s only two.
Look at the contract. Is it a little scary? Yes, okay, probably won’t trade the world for him.
Look at the two teams. Who needs what? What guys are a team really not going to want to move?

Slap it together, and you’ve probably got a decent trade: this level of thought represents 2% of ACGMs, and .000002% of maple leaf ACGMs.

1st/Urho would likely be the base. Rest would be financial. Do they take Moore or retain? If it’s Moore than another small contract like Bjork. If they retain another mid-level prospect.

The trades we make, often do make more sense than what is done in the NHL. That's the problem. For every GMJR move, it skews the landscape here.

For example someone explain to me this Maata trade?

Had this been done here. Hawks fans would have ripped it to shreds!

All i have been thinking about is a certain Kings fan who has been telling everyone how loaded the Kings were at LD and would NEVER consider adding a mediocre LD for 3m plus for the last year now. Lol.

I mean Maata was decent in the playoffs. Hawks fans liked him. He's not a world beater but compared to what they have Dehaan maybe one of the worst metric defensemen in the NHL. Maata was traded originally for Kahun and a 5th. Now look. No one saw this coming.

I said on several occasions that I would be happy with Nick Leddy or Marc Staal, and Maata fits that outline pretty well. But I expected the return to be higher for each of them. My colleague @tkecanuck341, however, very accurately did not.

I loved the trade because it now shows a little of whats going on behind the scenes.
You can't tell me in million years that Oli Maata couldn't have been had somewhere without retention.
These Gms are scrambling and confused about their options. It showed me quite frankly that every team wants to lower payroll even big markets.
The only bonus to that trade for Chicago, to be fair to that ECHL'r but cmon, the advantage, was they got to determine where Maata's destination would be and they saved real money. The cap hit is the same and it's 2 years longer. That trade was worse for Chicago in hockey operations. They actually were better off buying him out!

I love chaos so this is neat.

Tbh, for OEL I've seen both reactions from the Bruins fans, whatever it is here, on Twitter or FB. Some want him, some don't. For me, I'm not a fan of big moves and rather play it safe than making it and losing the deal (see Seguin deal). If OEL was going to play on the second pair with a $5M cap hit for 3-4 years, fine, I wouldn't mind it.

With the flat cap, cap space will be even more important for the next years. So if we get a guy who makes $8.25M and plays like a $5-6M guy, it's not ideal. And I'm not even talking about the term. Most fans/people who want him seem to get stopped by his reputation of being an elite D, which he was but 4 years ago. Gotta take in consideration how he is at current moment and how he will be in 2, 3, 4 years. We'll definitely need someone to play in the top4 since Chara can't play there anymore on a regular basis and Krug is likely gone, but I think we can get a better player with a better contract.

Another thing is that we don't have much prospects and even our top5 prospects would/could be top10/top15 for teams like LA, OTT, NYR who have the best prospects pools in the league. Add that with the risk that the player you get in return doesn't perform as good as we expected/he should, we lose those prospects for almost nothing or we could have had a better deal.

Other than that, I don't have any issue with OEL, he is a great person and a good player but at the end, it's business and I just don't see the fit.

Maatta isn't my first choice by any means. He's going to need to play big minutes on the first pairing with Doughty, and I'm not sure he's suited or capable for that.

That being said, he does check all the other boxes. 2 years remaining. Cheap to acquire. Can play in all situations (5v5, PP, PK). Has playoff experience. Satisfies expansion draft exposure requirements. Will be left unprotected.

I think he's an upgrade from Hutton or Ryan (both of whom I thought were terrible), but not as good of an option as Leddy. If the Kings ownership is concerned with salary expenditure, then it makes sense why they went this route instead of with Leddy+Komarov. I would have preferred Leddy though.
