Yea, I think it was best for LAK to get some Veteran LHD no point in rushing the young guys and cause the EDM effect ruining prospects for a decade. Good move for both sides.

Bjornfot and Clague are more than likely going to get another season to tweak their games before they make the NHL. Anderson has the best odds of making the NHL next season, and if he does that still leaves two slots on the left to be filled. Maata also helps with exposure requirements for Seattle.

Määttä is nowhere near his market value, since he's a fringe top-4 dman, but good lord Chicago, you could've gotten at least something. He's a completely usable player, this isn't a case of "dump to a tanking team who LTIRs the guy".

Only way I can understand this is that Chicago is clearing space to sign Strome/Kubalik and there weren't any major takers for Maatta.

I like this trade for both sides. I though maata was a cap dump so this is good for the hawks imo.

As for LA, they needed a stopgap veteran option for their young guys. Having all 3 of clague, bjornfot, and andersson make the team in the same year isn’t ideal imo. That’s a really young right side.

I'm not crying over this. Most us Hawks fans were hoping for more, but that's the optimists we are. The difference between a 5th and what happened really isn't THAT much. At least its for 2 years vs 4. NOT a win, but not a huge loss when it's only $750k. I do think Maatta is FAR better than what Pens fans think. I think LAK will really benefit from a real professional LD and they'll be a better team for this trade.

I don't understand this from Chicago at all. Olli Maatta is at least a serviceable top 6 LHD that you traded Dominik Kahun for. The Hawks get back an ECHLer/AHLer which essentially is a wash. So begs the question, why wasn't he simply bought out?

$680K for 4 seasons. Hawks save more cap space and get essentially the same return. Nothing.

Bro you and I both know that first of all the retention is a measly $70k more than the buyout and it’s for 2 years whereas a buyout was 4 years. This is not as awful a move as everyone who just knee-jerk reactioned on here thinks. Hawks dumped salary and created a spot for Mitchell. I liked Maatta and thought he filled his role well but Mitchell needs a spot and Maatta had to leave. Could/should Bowman have gotten more? Possibly but this is a cap dump and I think it’s fine.
