Description
Piecing together some tidbits from our beat writer's article today, article can be found at: https://theathletic.com/2104772/2020/09/30/russo-what-im-hearing-about-the-wilds-offseason-so-far/

"Calgary has shown interest [in Dumba], but I don’t get the impression that the Wild are really interested even if the Flames were willing to trade Sean Monahan" Maybe a 3 way deal could work where Dumba is sent to Calgary but Monahan goes to another team who is looking to shake things up?

"The Sharks are one team that has shown interest [in Donato]."

And additionally Sharks writer @KKurzNHL at The Athletic tweeted
"As @RussoHockey mentions here, the Sharks may be interested in Devan Dubnyk and Ryan Donato.

From what I understand, there are some real legs to this. Feels like we could — key word, could — be looking at some sort of package deal for both."

Sounds like Donato and Dubnyk to San Jose could be on the horizon. Speculation on my part but the Sharks could look to make big some changes this offseason, they had a pretty underwhelming year considering their roster is pretty talented.

Russo mentioned that a Byfuglien signing could happen, he met with Guerin a couple weeks ago and while it is unlikely at this point maybe a condensed season would entice Byfuglien.

I would do this. Although if the Wild traded just with the Sharks and used Donato and Dubnyk, I would like to see them grab Noah Gregor if they can’t get Chmelevski.

Id consider this deal if you take Jones as well. But in its current form its 100% no. Hertl>>Monahan. Donato and Dub we can get for virtually nothing because Dub sucks.

With Dubnyk in the deal you arent getting anything past maybe a third. Gregor and Chmelevski are no goes.

From a complete outsider prospective, I'd much rather have Monahan, but to each their own.

You understand Dubnyk has one year left at 4.3M, and with retention can be brought down to 2.15M?

Dubnyk wouldn't even be in the top 6 worst contracts on the Sharks.

That is a hard no from Calgary.

Dumba is a great player, but the FLames aren't decimating their center depth for him. The only conceivable way Monahan is dealt is if it is Monahan+ for an upgrade at center.

I mean Hertl has really only had 1, arguably 2, good seasons. Monahan has scored 30 goals in 3 seasons, and scored 27 goals two seasons in a row. Hertl brings more speed and playmaking, but I think Monahan is the better player. Points aren't everything of course, but I'll take the 30 goal scoring center who has never played less than 70 games in a season that happens to be younger and is signed for a year longer on similar AAV. Just my 2 cents.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think CGY is moving Monahan for Dumba 1-on-1. MIN would have to add on that swap.

Just a thought, but would you be in for a Dumba+9th overall for Monahan+Bennett+19th overall swap?

I agree, I think a small add is in order, just wasn't sure what... I wouldn't make that trade. I think we need to either keep 9 or move up to grab one of Rossi or Perfetti. Also sounds like Guerin doesn't Monahan even if I do love him for us.

Oh god just how big of a Hertl fan you are?

For instance, compare the points of those guys from last 5 years? It's a 5-0 wash for Monahan. Add to the pile the fact that one of these 1B centers can actually stay healthy, and there's pretty much nothing going in Hertl's way in this comparison...

Monahan is being helped by Gaudreau more than Gaudreau is being helped by Monahan. This is why Russo talks about waiting for something better and why Guerin probably isn't interested.
Monahan would be a fine 2C for us, and I'd be interested, but the difference in value isn't as much as some think, and if Dumba rebounds, he arguably has more value than Monahan. His down season is why it's realistic right now.

The reason I like him for us so much is because I think Zucc could revive his career playing with Monahan. Monahan needs a playmaker to produce, if he and Zucc don't have chemistry then Fiala is a hell of a playmaker as well and even Johansson could work if (when) our experiment to force him at center fails. Not to mention I loved Kaprizov's playmaking in the KHL when I've watched him over the years. I just think we have a great situation for Monahan to step into and succeed. Sounds like Guerin doesn't feel the same way and it doesn't really matter what I think since I'm not the GM, lol.

I think you have to play Monahan with Fiala. Monahan doesn't just need a playmaker to succeed, he needs a play driver.

x-Monahan-Fiala
Kaprizov-Johansson-Zuccarello

Hopefully draft another future top 6 center this year, because that's a subpar top 6. Johansson probably shouldn't be there, and Zuccarello is only getting older.

Monahan would be a great 1C for us. I don't think Guerin is interested because he doesn't fit with the plan he wants to put in place, Monahan is too short sighted.

Because we are conflating top 10 center in the league with a top line center. Monahan has to potential to help drive play offensively that we have lacked, he would be top line material all day long.

He doesn't do that.

He comes in around 30ish for all centers, statistically, while playing next to Gaudreau, who DOES drive the play for him, and is better than any winger we have.

Calgary fans have even come out and said he should be a 2C, like the fans that watch him most and have every reason to be biased in favor of him don't think he's good enough to be the 1C.

You, who has looked up his stats and only watched him when we plays the Wild, think he would be a "great 1C."

So the numbers disagree with you, the eye test disagrees with you, explain to me why you're right.

Pardon the verbage, he would add the ability to score goals we have lacked. I'm not a fan of a Monahan move, but a Dumba-Monahan trade fills an area of weakness from an area of strength.

And as I've said, I would be fine with a Dumba-Monahan straight swap. I would not be fine with adding significant value to Dumba because some people are under the assumption that Monahan is better than he is because all they see are his stats.

We're on the same page here. I think many would assume Dumba one for one (ish) solves the center issue. If we were at the point of contending, then Monahan would make a lot more sense. But we're not. A first and a high quality prospect or a young promising and unproven center is what he should be expected to bring back, and I think both of those things make more sense than adding a high cost player at the mo.
