One big trade and small signings to make a contender

Description
Columbus will lose one of their two goalies to Seattle. They get a top goalie to pair with Korpisalo, and save $3m in actual salary for the coming year. Josh Anderson is not what their team needs, they are looking to add some scoring, speed and skill. Also, while insurance will cover ~75% of Dubinsky's salary, they will still be saving $1.5M. Mid-small market teams are going to need to get creative with how they shed dollars. They save $4.5M in these moves. That't not even mentioning that Johnsson was paid more upfront than in the final years of his contract.
For Toronto, they get a lot of what they are looking for. Size, a defensive d-man and a goalie that would be their starter for the next two seasons. This trade would probably be contingent on Savard signing an extension.
This may be the slowest fourth line of all time. But their size and muscle will be strong on the forecheck.

I’d keep Engvall as 4C and put Barabanov in the lineup, but this is one of the better CBJ/TOR trades I’ve seen.

Not a chance CBJ takes that. Anderson and Johnsson cut each other, Merzlikins is more valuable than Andersen due to age and contract and Savard is much more useful than a 2nd and 3 AHLers with no NHL potential whatsoever. It's a classic quantity for quality trade.

Read my note. This is a financial move as much as a hockey move.

They don't. Merzlikins was a rookie this year, therefore he's exempt from the expansion draft as he hasn't accrued more than two full season by the point the ED becomes.

I don't think CBJ is financially unstable. They were offering Panarin a 12 x 8 contract, so money is not an issue for them.

Good point re: Merzlikins. Panarin contract was before COVID...

Regardless, haven't seen anything regarding them to cutting player salary or making an internal cap hit.

Columbus declines. That does nothing for them... dubinskys contract is fully insured from what I’ve read, and you’re offering us a lot of nothing out side of the 2nd that we’d want. This trade is very one sided.
