he is going to be so much better than Marner. compare him to matthews at least because thats going to be his level of impact

Even if he's not as good as Marner, if he's playing a top six role on a team with Matthews and Tavares, he's going to look decent. Can Marner keep up that production on a new team with a suspect defensive group? There's some risk for NYR here. Unless you're saying that Kuznetsov=Matthews. In which case I have no argument. smile

I think the Leafs would be very interested in that. Laf may not be as good as Marner but he's going to be really good and the salary savings for the next 3 years make it very intriguing. I don't think it really sets TO back much since they would have so much extra money they could use to sign some other helpful players.

see my other post about Laf.

you have to consider his learning curve, much like Marner, he won't be producing above a point per game in his first season.... so, year 1 & 2 are developmental, year 3 is the big stride, year 4 you pay more than you currently are for Marner IF it works out.

if it doesn't, then you're weaker up front.

Laf is a projection, and with any projections, there's a risk associated with achieving them.... albeit a smaller risk than later picks, it's a risk nonetheless.

in the last 10 years, how many 1st OA produce at the pace Marner is currently doing?..... 2... McDavid and Matthews.
how many busts in the last 10 years?...1 .. Yakupov

there are some very good players, but Marner is up there

and I don't even like Marner.

Playmaking LW vs. Shoot first C....

risk is risk...

I offer you $1M right now, or a 90% chance at $2M tomorrow.
most prudent people take the $1M right now.

there is very little risk associated with Laf. the dude is going to be an absolute stud. Would you have traded first overall back in 2016 for Johnny Gaudreau??? because thats essentially the argument here

But that's only because most of us don't have a million dollars. The Leafs, after this trade, just move Nylander back to 1R. Their top line is still pretty decent.

Laf is in elite company with Crosby: winning CHL player of the year twice. No other player has done that. He was dominant at the World Juniors, being the best player there as well. At every level of hockey Laf has been a cut above the rest. In terms of draft day expectations, Matthews in 2016 vs Laf in 2020 is very comparable, probably slight edge to Laf tbh. He's the most promising first overall pick since McDavid

Line 1:
Laf - Matthews - Nylander
Line 2:

??? - Tavares - ???

it's a steep drop off, Toronto is a badly designed team, that relies on the big 4 to out produce other teams to compensate for weak D and Sometimes solid and sometimes questionable goaltending.

my point is, if Laf can't produce at the same pace, the offense is weaker.... sure they may afford Pietr, but Pietr isn't the solution they need, because they have nothing behind him, and 36 minutes a game he's not on the ice.

once again, neither team really wins this trade... Rangers got lucky in their rebuild to get a 2nd OA and a 1st OA, and have Panarin and Zib... just run with your build, don't try and speed it up.

Okay, and look at the CHL output this year, only 7 of the top 15 are from the CHL.
the draft field from the CHL is probably the weakest it's been in a long time.

in 2019's draft, 5 of the first 20 picks came from the CHL.

I'm not denying his talent, the kid is talented... but his competition isn't very strong for winning CHL player of the year.
the CHL has been on the decline for almost 15 years now, so that's a mighty low hill for you to die on.

The kid is a top end talent, playmaking LW, definitely more hyped than Hughes, Dahlin, Hischier, but he's not on the same level as Matthews.
He's more of a Huberdeau...

everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I strongly think you are wayyyyy off on this one. Laf's talent and skill level is comparable with Matthews at the time of the draft. If 2016 Matthews was in this draft, it would be a toss up for first overall, depending on what team was picking. This kid is going to be the real deal. While he is not a generational talent, he has superstar potential, similar to Matthews, Stamkos, Kane, Malkin, etc..

No he isn't. Laf will be good and possibly elite but Matthews is going to be a top 3 player hockey very soon. Better than all but McDavid and MacKinnon.

Unfortunately since McDavid everyone who is the clear #1 has been billed as generational, most are not. Including Laf

no one has been billed as generation since Mcdavid lol. Certainly not Hughes, Dahlin was supposed to be a franchise D (not generational), I still think he could get there, Hiescher generational? ya right. and matthews wasn't ever labeled generation either.

im not saying Laf will be generation, he probably wont be, but he could absolutely be a dominant franchise winger and end up in the HHOF.

thats his "player comparable". he will be like a better Huberdeau. they compare byfield to malkin but that doesn't mean hes going to have the level of impact as him.

You do realize everything you say works both ways.... there's nothing that says Byfield WILL be Malkin, just that he COULD be.

Just like nothing says that Laf WILL be Huberdeau, just that he COULD be.

but those might also be lofty projections.

you're banging on him being a guaranteed phenom... nothing is guaranteed and that's the whole point of this from the beginning, the risk isn't worth it for the leafs, and the rangers have a better organization to develop said talent.

THERE IS ZERO GUARANTEE THAT LAF COULD/WILL BE BETTER THAN MARNER IS RIGHT NOW. awesome face

the odds of him being a great player are greater than him being a bust.... and there are chances for everything between bust and stud.

my whole argument was based on this: would you trade 2016 first overall for Johnny Gaudreau? Matthews could've turned into a bust (clearly he didn't), and Gaudreau at the time was similar to Marner.

a team will take the chance on Laf (or Matthews) because their upside is so much higher than players like Marner (or Gaudreau) that it is worth the very small chance that they do not develop properly.

Matthews has been labeled that and is delivering. He's a two way force and the best 5v5 goal scorer there is.

dude, "Matthews" and "generation" do not belong in the same sentence, unless that sentence is "Matthews is 100% not a generational talent"

Most 5v5 goals since he's entered the league. Often with low ice time due to Babs.
