As a Rangers fan I wouldn’t do any of these. The WSH and TOR trades are counterproductive to what the organization has built and the CAR trade is just unnecessary. Buy him out, the cap penalty is not that bad...

You’re telling me the Leafs wouldn’t want a better player (long-term) and $9 million in cap space?

Add five for trading Trouba? Subtract five for buying out Smith? But they'll take ten more shots a night by replacing Chytil and Morgan with Kuznetsov and Marner. Those guys set up everyone they play with for scoring chances.

What are the odds?

90% chance he turns into a 90-100 point winger.... which they already have in Marner
10% chance he turns out to be worse than Marner

these are general odds, I'm guessing.... the only real advantage the leafs get is, if scenario 1, he is as good, then they get 3 years of cap room, ultimately to have to sign him to the $10-12M contract.

Dubas rolls the dice, and scenario 2 shows up, and the team wastes most of Tavares and possibly Matthews time with the leafs.

russian roulette.

they have bigger problems than that, they need a goalie, and in 2 years need to re-sign Rielly.... it doesn't just end with Marner and Pietr.

My point was that this trade gives Toronto not only the likely better player long term but enough cap to sign another elite player like Pietrangelo. Hard pass for the Rangers...

I tried buying him out Didn't see a good path to 21 people under the cap while keeping last year's top six and adding an elite scoring line. Tag me if you can build it better?

Well, when you put it like that, I almost think Toronto should add, except that there's still maybe a 10% chance Laf busts.

Doesn’t really matter if they can’t keep the puck out of the net. What will result is the same exact team from last year with higher scores. You increase the offensive talent dramatically and decrease the defensive talent dramatically and you have the same result: mediocrity.

I think both teams need to pass.

see my other post about Laf.

it doesn't help either team unless some serious luck kicks in... Marner turns Lemieux into a 30 goal scorer, and Laf runs 100 point rookie season feeding Matthews.. I don't think either happens.

I think the Leafs would be very interested in that. Laf may not be as good as Marner but he's going to be really good and the salary savings for the next 3 years make it very intriguing. I don't think it really sets TO back much since they would have so much extra money they could use to sign some other helpful players.

It's not a take it a run situation, but it's something to seriously ponder. Marner is a really good player, if Laf turns out to be as good that will be terrific but an ELC who could still produce 80 points is worth a lot to TO as well. Keep in mind Marner is well liked by his teammates and does a lot of good work in the community. That all means stuff.
