Description
Apparently Vegas is looking at Pietrangelo in free agency. In order to afford him, the Knights would need to trade/buyout Fleury and flip Martinez to another team.

https://puckprose.com/2020/09/19/how-vegas-golden-knights-afford-alex-pietrangelo/

The Kings are reportedly in the market for a veteran LHD. Martinez would be a decent option. They acquired two 2nd round picks from Vegas for Martinez at the deadline earlier this year. They could trade the 2021 pick from STL back to reacquire him, keep him for most of the season, then trade him again at the deadline next year to a contender to get another pick.

Who knows, it could even be back to Vegas again for that same pick. Martinez did well in Vegas and the only reason they're looking to flip him is to clear space. This idea would essentially loan Martinez to LA for most of the regular season until the deadline, then trade him back to Vegas with a minimal cap hit (pro rated to the deadline).

Lebrun actually made a suggestion of how vegas could fit in pitrangelo and ironically give toronto a top 4 rhd.

He suggested they move Schmidt in a deal to toronto giving them the cap space to bring in pitrangelo. Despite his short time in vegas Martinez actually looked solid and really fit in with the team and was producing better defensive numbers than Schmidt.

A dcore of

Martinez-Theodore
Mcnabb-Pitrangelo (Mcnabb plays similar to Bouwmeester)
Holden-Whitecloud

would be fine

Schmidt is a LHD playing RD(like Theo) because Vegas'
RHD is Whitecloud and that's it.

Trade the Blues 2021 2nd for him then trade him back at the deadline 50% retained for that same pick and a 2020 3rd.

With the proration at the deadline, I don't know that Vegas would need LA to retain salary. His effective cap hit at that point would be like $600k. I think Martinez as a rental is worth about a 2nd, so I'd be fine with just getting that same pick back. The Kings are essentially borrowing him for 3/4 of the season. We'd obviously need to see what the market for defenseman looks like at next season's deadline.

How would his cap hit be 600k?

Cap hits are pro-rated based on when the player is traded. So if the Kings acquire Martinez in the off-season and keep him on the roster for most of the season, then trade him to Vegas at the deadline, then Vegas only gets stuck with his pro-rated hit for what's left of the season. I actually did bad math and it comes out to $860k, not $600k. Trade deadline is 40 days before the end of the season divided by 186 total days in the season multiplied by Martinez's $4M cap hit = $860k.

I don’t think that's how it works, but okay.

That is how it works. Cap hits are calculated on a per diem basis. It's outlined in Section 50.9 of the CBA (Page 286) if you want to read it.

Here's a decent explanation on the HF boards from 2010 that explains it pretty well. A lot of stuff has changed in the CBA, but not the daily calculation of cap space.
