I didn't check out his NMC before they removed him from Sens roster but if it was a full NMC. They kind of did have to protect him. Never I mind I found a version of it was a full NMC.

He's not a part of the team's future, and the Sens don't really care about the cap space. This way, they only have to pay him 2/3 of this season's salary instead of the entire thing.

If there was no expansion draft next season, or if Ryan didn't have a NMC, I suspect they would have just let him finish out his contract. Since they were going to have to buy him out anyway, might as well do it now and save some $$$.

That doesn't make sense. They have plenty of cap space so they should have kept him as long as possible so that the buyout wouldn't carry forward into the years that they would be competitors. Only way this makes sense is if they don't plan on competing in the next 4 years.

Ottawa isn't a cap team, so they don't really care how long the cap hit is on the books. Since they bought him out, they only owe him 2/3 of his remaining salary. If they bought him out next summer, they would have had to pay him 100% of his salary for 2020-21, and 2/3 of his contract for 2021-22 (i.e. more). Buying him out now instead of next summer saves Melnyk $1.83M in cash.
