Description
I'm not saying this is a good idea. It has a few initial assumptions.
1. NMC's are waived for whatever reason
2. Toronto is willing, maybe even interested in moving Travares
3. NYRs are interested in Travares and sees it already has a back log at left wing trading 1oa
I don't think montour's great but he fits a right d slot that definately available and at 11mil its marners job to make that second line good. That being said i have the same top 6 and 16 mil to shore up goal add a 1 solid right d and flesh ou the bottom 6.
I'm not counting on prospect just hoping one shows up for me.
I'm mostly curious if the trades seam fair or interesting even. Constructive feedback please, this was just a fun idea.

Well, Lundqvist is a partial cap dump and Strome has not been good any other season other than this past one. Start by definitely taking out the Pit 1st. and probably ask for a young roster player or prospect as well.

Why do the rangers do this? They don’t. Stop leafs fans, you are not getting the number one pick for any trade you would be willing to do

Not a Leafs fan LOL. When I read it i thought it was the 2021 1st. And NYR does this because they had trouble providing offence anytime Zibanejad wasn't on the ice and they need to move a goalie. the best option is Lundqvist.

Im not a leafs fan, its not even so much for leafs getting the 1st. I actually was looking to upgrade NYR at center. I know people get super excited about 1st overall picks but they don't = cups. Well built teams that make sensible trades and draft well = cups. How many first overalls are on boston or st. Louis? Travares himself is a first overall, he left NYI and now some how they're a regular at the conference finals (not that thats a pro JT point). Your still getting a 1st rnd pick this year and an center that makes you a legit contender, i was doing this for the rangers.

NYR wont be trading the 2020 1st. Change that to the 2021 1st and take out the Pits 1st and you have a good deal IMO.

Teams that do well, draft and develop well while signing/trading for key role players to play around their core/top talent.

The leafs do this to clear cap and leave marner to fulfil his contract. They're paying more for centers than any other team in the league and its not working. For me, again im a sabre's fan not a leafs fan, its time to change course. If you think changing a goalie or adding a great right d is all the leafs need to do then this trades not for you. But this makes a new leafs with options and potential go a different with a solid top 6 for next 3 years.

Nope, in this instance the leafs want dynamic talent back in the trade and thier building with thier wings. Your gonna have to give the 1oa 2020. Good luck with lias andersson

this angle is so tired "you need to trade your great players for significantly less value because something good might come along later!"
it's nonsense. Tavares the leafs have had Tavares and Matthews for like a season and a half and one year they took the 2nd best team in the league to 7 games and then there was a global pandemic that made everything go crazy. "it's not working" is some lazy analysis

I wouldn't say lazy, I just don't know what the issue is but they are not IMO as good up front as they should be.
As far as the "tired angle" of trading off your best players, Lafreniere is right on the team adding offense to make up for JT. In my defense of "trading for less than value" where should the value be for him? I have rangers fans telling me thier getting ripped off so wheres the value of travares in your opinion? Also what do you think of the resulting team? Drastically worse' serviceable, not bad? I think its at least flexible and not trying to figure out its cap every year. I posted this to get takes on it after all.

it's very lazy because it's repeated as gospel with zero analysis past "but the cap!"
As far as his value, well the first over all is probably good vaccum value for him but i can see why the rangers wouldnt do it. And to my point there really isnt anything the rangers would realistically offer for him that would be good enough for the leafs.
the resulting team is much worse. the downgrade at C at both 2 and 3 is not offset by Laf, especially as a rookie, Lazar is bad and the goaltending is worse. And the defense is, at best exactly the same as last year because Montour isnt good

I disagree with 3c being a down grade. And if there's no trade there fine, i still haven't seen any reason it doesn't benefit both sides fo the next 3 years. Thank tho

Dry market for montour, Cheap dependable backup. Lazar doesn't really have value as a piece right now and although i would love to get more for montour than a low 4th and a backup goalie (especially in this market) i'll believe the sabres can do better when i see it. There's a lot of bad faith between me and them and the fact that we haven't traded or extended montour as of a year ago is the tip of the iceberg.
Aside from that i needed a way to unload a goalie for a 4th line rw and right d. Now that's where i got lazy! Honestly the more i look at it i think the sabres win cuz the 4th. And bernier makes more of an impact with sabres than montour with leafs imo.

Yeah, you have no idea what the market is for him, and if anything, we can keep him. This trade blows chunks

Please clarify you think the market is much higher for montour? I find often enough he is compared to risto. It seems hard enough to move risto, because of contract however last year RFA rights with arbitration rights isn't much better i feel. Montour getting 4750000 in arbitration or something could be just as bad as making this trade. Especially if we can't move risto. Picture paying 10mil to the two of them just for montour to go UFA. Isn't that worse then ending up with a 4th?
