You're only taking into consideration point totals and think that's the reason why they're comparable? ... Marner's better defensively, he's a leader in the locker room (alternate captain), tax situation is incredibly different in Colorado than it is in Ontario. All of those lead Marner to get more. You can argue Marner is overpaid, sure. But to say that he should have signed for what Rantenen signed for is just false.
Umm... Nope, I'm not only taking into consideration point totals; not sure where you get that from. I
mentioned point totals, sure, because it's y'know... relevant.
Marner also wasn't an alternate captain when he signed and you can say 'locker room leader', but where is the evidence that Rantanen isn't? And if we're going to take things like tax rate into account, where's the mention of endorsement opportunities that Marner enjoys (heavily) here in Toronto that he wouldn't get to the same extent elsewhere?
I'm also not saying what Marner should have signed for (again, not sure where you got that from); it's in his best interest to sign for as much as he can get. He just got more than he's worth under the cap, which is
about what Rantanen got.
