Description
I don't really have a great feel for what Orlov is worth, and I'm sure Washington is high on vrana but I think Marner would be the guy to get OVI past Gretzky. Be constructive not a crybaby

    my requirement for Marner trade:

    - top 4 RD
    - replacement top 6 winger
    - mid first / higher end prospect
    - 2nd / mid tier prospect

That gets the convo going for me. Otherwise I'd prefer to keep Marner

lol for an overpaid winger. No wants to touch the marner deal. Thats not seeing the forest for the trees. The Cap is a thing. Marner deal is cancer in a flat cap world. Answer me this do you think the Carey price deal is good? Because they are both overpaid and very hard to move

Marner is overpaid but it's not Carey Price contract bad. Marner should be making 9.5 - 9.75 price on the other hand is probably around 6.5 to 7.5 big difference.

Vrana is underpaid. Should be making 6M. Under a flat cap, his trade value is really, really, really high.

for a 23 year old Carey Price it'd be fine. Marner is like 1.5M overpaid - I'll admit, he should be making Rantanen money - but that's not THAT big of a deal

Also for a 23 year old Price it might not be so bad. 32 year old Price? Of course not

Fair point. But to ignore the advantage to dumping Marner is ignorance. Nylander contract is great, you can't move Tavares and you won't move Matthews.

Trading Marner for help would be a God send for the Leafs and every team knows this thus they have no leverage and will be owned in any Marner trade.

Agreed. He's worth far more than maybe an even better player, solely because he's such a good asset

But acting like a 90 point player is a cap dump is also ignorance....

True. Agreed. Not an issue if Tor can build a team around him.

OP's main point is that they can't, and they should try to trade for underpaid guys like Vrana. The trouble is, even at last Spring's deadline, teams like Tampa set the trade market high on guys who produce well at a low cap hit. Vrana's on ice value is still slightly less than Marner's and Vrana's a year older, but under a flat cap, since Marner makes over three times as much money as Vrana, Toronto would have to add a lot to get Washington seriously interested.

Barclay Goodrow getting a 1st round pick solely because hes making less than a million a year on 2 year deal. That's quite the markup for cap flexibility.

Vrana > Marner because of cap comforts

Lol absolute garbage, well that takes your credibility away right there. Research before making baseless claims, once you've done that then come talk to me. And I think you already know the rest of the roster is well improved 3c in a 4c spot, top 4 d man in a bottom six role two new top 4 RHD and a top 6 winger at a third of the price. Get real bud.

Lol. Sorry, I didn't know you were the kid with all the answers. I'll make sure to double check with you the next time a team needs to be ruined. 👌🏻

Is the goal to preserve the coincidence of the Leafs drafting a decent forward three years in a row, or to win a couple playoff series, though?

The thing with the marner trades is that he’s young, Would need a young centre piece. Not orlov, Ellis etc. It would have to be something around ekblad, Jones, Dobson.

I like that you thought Orlov was the centerpiece here. I think that's a good illustration of how much of an overpay it is for the Caps. Google "Jakub Vrana" sometime, though. He's decent. smile

As a Caps fan I'm fine with a 3rd for Holl around 50% retention, and I'm fine with Leason for a 2nd.

Vrana for Marner is fine if the cap balances, but WSH doesn't have any bad contracts to balance it out.
