Is Pietrangelo possible? Yes. Would it be dumb for the Leafs to sign him? Yes. Would they have to sacrifice depth to sign him? Yes.

It just never made sense to me on why the leafs would sign him. Yes he’s good, but he’s going to want $9,000,000+. You sign him and that’s $42,000,000 in 4 players (AM, MM, JT, and AP respectively).

Detroit is the wrong target team for Andersen, and the Islanders can’t afford the cap for Kerfoot (plus they have Pageau as 3C), but you made Petro fit so good work

Not if the Andersen and Kerfoot trades have to be with those two teams.

Why pay for the rights to Pietrangelo if Toronto is going to sign him for 7 years?? The contract, with mostly signing bonuses and NMC, is sufficient to get him signed. The only reason to trade for his rights would be for an 8th year...

Yes, it's technically possible but we won't be able to afford Rielly in 2 years so it's kinda pointless.

Well regardless we have to shed salary....send Dermott over to create that cap relief and get an extra year if you want it. Otherwise it saved me from tryin to figure out where to send Dermott

    It's possible.

ASIAK, Pietrangelo is more interesting in the structure of a contract instead of just length and salary. Specifially, in the form of signing bonuses, which is essentially a guaranteed chunk of cash at the start of every season. St Louis doesn't do this, since this money is not able to be bought out, still has to be paid during a lockout and could chip off a value of a trade down the line.

Toronto would be able to provide Pietrangelo with a front loaded deal and the guaranteed money he's after; the Tavares and Matthews contracts are pretty much league minimum salary with 10 million bonuses. However, they wouldn't be the only team to provide this and someone could provide a better bid in terms of total value, while still providing the same concessions.

The only major advantage Toronto has over everyone else is that Pietrangelo is from Toronto. Unless his hometown fervor gets him to sign something that wouldn't handicap the team, I don't think he's coming here.

Honestly (unpopular opinion here I know), but if Sandin develops as advertised, you guys shouldn’t resign Rielly.

I dunno about that. If Detroit can get him signed I think its a very shrewd move for Yzerman. Detroit desperately needs a goalie.

Two 2nds is steep considering he almost surely won’t sign on a horrible Detroit squad, and at 31 how many more miles does he have left? Say in 4 years I would expect Detroit to be in the playoffs, but he’ll be 35. He would make a great filler until we draft/acquire some sort of long term solution in goal, but I can’t see Yzerman giving up that much for a filler goalie.

I agree 100%, but I don't see Dubas moving Rielly for assets either this year or next and I'm not a fan of letting him walk for free. If we aren't going to resign him then why bring in Pietrangelo? It just seems pointless to me. I think we're on the same page here.

Losing depth can be fixed thru FA where you run 3rd Line with 2,4M players ( like Janmark + Larsson + Fast = 6,5M instead Johnsson - Kerfoot - Kapanen = 10M ) and 4th Line with Simmonds - Koivu - Spezza type of structure.

Actually thing is.....TML Stanley window is from 2019/2020 to 2022/2023 when Tavares will start to decline proly. So as much as i was in doubts about Pietrangelo to be signed, im assuming Dubarellis plan is that exactly, so his way of ALL IN and it could actually pay off. Lets worry about small things later, when 1967 will finally be erased from TML collective mind.

What he wants and what he will get are two different things. The Leafs won't have to necessarily out bid teams either. They can just give a pile of bonus money to sweeten the deal. I agree I am not really a fan of the idea but I wouldn't not at least talk with him.

For me, I think a smart GM would be patient, not a lot of teams have money so being patient may result in bargains this year. The current economic has half the league looking to cut salary and that will have a big impact on the mid range FA's. I would target Tanev and try to get him on a short term deal.

Rielly is better than Sandin and in two years will still be better and I would never let a guy that good go. Sandin can develop and hopefully play the right side and then there is no problem

If he wants to squeeze the last dollar out of a team trading for his rights won't matter. He'll go to free agency and get every penny he can. Whether it be from Toronto Vegas or another team.

When does Toronto stop bidding against itself if they trade for his rights?? Tavares 'took a discount' to come to the Leafs when the cap was lower. If they offer 8.5x7 does he counter with 11.5x7, all but minimum as signing bonus, all signing bonus in the 1st 4 years, full NMC, etc. Toronto has to do it because they traded for his rights??

You're missing the point. If you want petro and you wait for FA, you run the risk of losing him. If you're serious about acquiring him then trade something of value to the blues with the contract in place
