Description
I don't think any of these moves are earth shattering. It's mostly about freeing up some wing spots for younger prospects. If Patrick can't go then Frost gets his spot. The Laughton trade allows the flyers to potentially move up a few spots in the draft by being able to package an decent extra second round pick into a deal.

Grant and Pitlick could be swapped for any cheap free agent really. Potentially saving a few more precious cap dollars.

Detroit declines. That's basically a late 1st rd pick and Laughton is good but with no 20 or even a 15 goal season it just doesn't make sense for Detroit. Hagg is some where between a 4 and a 6 I'd give up a late 3rd for him but that is about it.

Devils accept. Subban would fit well with less pressure on him.
And NJ gets a good jersey boy in JVR.

If what Subban needs is less pressure he should NOT go to Philly

He can handle the pressure of big markets (aka thrived in Montreal). He just shouldn't be your #1, #2, and #3 defenceman like he was in NJD given our skeleton of a D core haha

Cannot retain cap on both sides of a trade...it is cap circumvention. League would not approve deal.

I get what you're saying but at the same time the value of picks usually flattens out around the 20 mark if I recall correctly so I guess it depends. A late first round to late second round don't change your chances a a great player much.

Laughton was also on pace for a 20 goal 45 point season in addition to the 9 points in 15 playoff games he put up. It was something of a breakout season as a middle 6 player who played wing and centre at various times.

I've never heard of that before, it's not circumventing any cap, everyone is still paid the same it's just that in year 3 the Flyers are still retaining on JVR and Subban is a free agent.

I do understand what you are saying but they are still players from the bottom half of your roster and I'm sorry but they aren't worth the 32nd pick of the draft. Take a look at some of the Toronto ACGMs where there are trades with the Wings, They keep trying to jam Kerfoot down Detroit and expecting a 2nd in return and honestly I doubt I'd give up a 3rd for Kerfoot. Laughton was on pace for almost 16 goals and 32 points. While Laughton had only played 49 games before the shut down but Philly had played 69 games,

Subban $1.5 x 2 = $3 million
JvR $1.5 x 3 = 4.5 million

net = $1.5 million

It would be then PHI retaining $500k over three years (total $1.5 million) and NJD retaining 0.

But that's just salary retention... There's no circumventing of the cap going on, both contracts are getting paid in full the Flyers are just retaining for longer. It means, in essence, the cap hits are the same for the first two years (the retained salaries cancel each other out) but the Flyers retain $1.5M in year three.

Eg:
Year one of the trade: Flyers retain 1.5 (JVR) but also receive 1.5 'discount' on Subban. Net cap change = 0

Year two: as above.

Year three: Subban's contract has expired so the Devils are no long retaining on it. JVR has 1 year left so the Flyers are still retaining $1.5m on that contract. Net cap change = a 1 year 1.5m cost to the Flyers or saving to New Jersey depending on whose books you're looking at.

I understand - I just don't think that is how league views it
