Hughes actually started to look pretty solid in the 2nd half of the year, I think once the pressure of winning that year was gone it made it easier for him. Also since he is 5'9 it was expected that adjustment time would take place. A good example of a player having a rough first year then really taking off is Joe Thorton, he had 7 points in D+1. Another more recent one is Svechnikov, 37 points in his first season but paced 74 this year and looks to be an 80-100 point player.
