Description
Leafs may be interested in a sign and trade for
Pietro for that extra year to lower cap hit....hope not, but this is how I see it happening.

St. Louis seems unwilling pay Pietro what he wants. Dubas could use the Leafs deep pockets to offer him a front loaded contract with the money tapering off from year 4-8 to bring the cap hit down and load it with signing bonuses.

Personally I think it's a mistake to offer a 31yr old an 8 year contract. Especially with the Leafs being tied to JT for another 5 years at 11M. Anyways here it goes...

IT would be structured as such;

Yr1-2 10M (9M signing bonus and 1M salary)
Yr2-6 8M ( all bonus except for the player minimum salary)
Yr7-8 6M (5M signing bonus and 1M salary)

Works out to a 8yr x 8 AAV. That is steep for a 31yr old player. But it could happen.

If Leafs go with a Reimer/Campbell combo, you could have the 70’s Canadiens dcore playing front of that duo and still finish bottom 10 in the league.

If the Blues are doing a sign and trade the price will be very high.

If you are trading for his rights then you might get it done for a 3rd, but a sign and trade is essentially trading for a roster player, which won't be cheap

So how does a 4th+6th round pick benefit St Louis in a sign and trade? Sign and trade you give up major assets not garbage picks Nylander probably has to be included in the deal at the very least.

That's nonsense. If the blues know he is for sure leaving they are guaranteed to do something like this don't be ridiculous. There has technically never been a sign and trade it's always trade with extension in place.

They said a similar thing about JT. I remember Seravalli said that Leafs were looking to do 1x15.9 and then extend to 8x9... we all know that wasn't gonna happen

For the uniformed, why would you structure the deal like that as opposed to just straight up salary?

The Blues aren't doing the Leafs a favour with the 4th and the 6th. They also aren't going to give up on signing Pietrangelo until he actually hit FA... regardless what the media noise is saying.

Signing bonuses are just getting your money up front, so it's a benefit because then the player can just invest it on day 1. Also, signing bonuses are paid even if there is a lockout. So it offers protection there.

There is a myth that escrow doesn't apply to signing bonuses, but there is nothing to back that up and it doesn't make any actual sense.

The big one for me is buyout protection. Buyouts are calculated by taking 2/3 of the remaining salary exclusive of the signing bonus. The player is entitled to all of their signing bonus as well. So essentially, there would be no benefit in buying him out.

If the Blues were willing to offer him a contract like that now, we wouldn't be talking about this. But they're not going to offer him that kind of term and contract structure because they're both not desperate and RHD is a position of strength. If they're happy to let him walk for free, rather than get something (regardless of how small) for him, then why not?
