what? that's not how retained salary works on the Kessel trade. It's already retained, you cant trade the retained part

That's what I thought, was corrected a couple days ago, a retained contract can only be moved once while retained the next time it's moved its the whole contract

Oilers look good with Kessel instead of Neal, he's off the books sooner and will certainly get 70 pts playing in that top 6

he also makes 8.5M and fell off a cliff this year. Forget 70 points on the top 6, he would be lucky to get 40 points

You can retain up to 50% on the portion you are on the hook for. Toronto is retaining 15% on Kessel. You can retain 50% on what you're on the hook for (which is 42.5% of the total cap hit of 8M) . So you deal Kessel at 3.4M cap hit.

Kessel is only owed $850k from the Coyotes the rest of the year, and $5.1M next yr. Neal is owed $5.75M for three years. That is a terrible idea. Retaining on Kessel AND paying Neal is even worse.

No where on here shows Kessel Retained, your shipping Kessel and his 6.8 that's all that's happened here

I don’t think ARI need to retain on OEL. Plenty of team a ready to pay to get him. Also that’s a nonsense for ARI to get a future UFA in that trade. If it’s the case I think MTL will have to pay more than that.

If Arizona isn't going to retain, I don't think any deal would work in this situation.

So they traded Kessel at 850k salary and 5.1M salary the next two years for 5.75M for three years for Neal? And added AA who presumably represents "value" at his 3M per qualifying offer?
$850k this year for $8.75M. That's an order of magnitude worse.
Next year is better. They "only" added $3 .65M that year.
Of course, they're on the hook for the full $8.75M again in year three.

Sounds like some thing a budget conscious team would do...

It does work, OEL sets your back end up till the end of time with Weber and Price, Daunlt isn't a true 2/1 more like 2/3 C he's a UFA and the 2nd is cheap price

Montreal isn't commiting that AAV and term for OEL. I'm sorry, try another team

$6.8M cap for Phil, Toronto still retaining $1.2M. I like this trade for Edmonton.

No way habs are trading for an overpaid Dman. They need offence, not defence
