Difference is that Krug is elite offensively/best QB in the league. Faulk isn't that. Also, better to pair Krug with a defensive-minded D so Parayko could work but he (Krug) isn't a top pair D.

Don't be so sure there's noway Krug is signing for anything less then 7 x $8,000,000 That's what Trouba is making and Krug is every bit as good as Trouba just that Trouba is some 4 years younger.

Trouba is overpaid and the whole league knows it. That 4 years is a massive difference when giving max term contracts.

Trouba will be 32 when his contract is done. That's the back end of prime for a defenceman.

Krug will be 36 when his contract is done. That's far past the prime of a player. Defencemen are usually good till the age of 34 and then decline quickly from 35 onwards (Chara being the exception).

I think Krug would be a good fit with Parakyo, but if you're going through the gauntlet to clear cap, you might as well spend the cash to retain Pietrangelo.
