I'm not sure how much an aging goal getter on an expiring contract that's asking for $12 mil a year on his new deal is worth realistically. I ABSOLUTELY believe he is worth more. But what he would actually get on the market is another story.

I, like you and some others on other boards initially were like No Way!...But, when you let the dust settle and think about it. He really has put the Caps on the map and is a fine Captain and is a top player (I don't really even need to tell you that, it's obvious). BUT, if Caps are like, 10 mil and he's like 'no, 12 mil' you have to give it to him. I don't think I would do that for 5 years. Maybe 4 or 3 yes for sure. The thing Bmac will have to worry about though is trying to trade a contract (or two) out to make room for him AND Vrana. Don't think Samsanov is a worry as much as OVI and Vrana. If we could move say Panik and Kempny lets say at the draft (sending a pick or two out with them), then we would have a way to make this all work. They would also just let the some of the Hershey kids have a shot to fill out the roster.

Sure they can. But in this case they won't. Kopitar may end up in another team's jersey after his current contract expires, but until then he's staying in LA.

I'm here for this roster, mostly to read the comments when Caps fans lose Schmidt in another expansion draft. But also a little bit to comment.

I think they'd take him for one or less. Maybe just a 2nd and a 3rd if he breaks 30 goals again this year.

If they trade Ovechkin, pay to lose Oshie, and don't have a 1st pick for two years, Vrana and Wilson are going to be under a little bit of pressure to score some goals.

Let me be clear, I do not feel that it is ideal to trade Ovi (just look at my username). But Vrana is putting up 25/25 seasons at just 14 - 15 minutes per game. I sense a 50/50 guy with top line minutes. Especially with Backstrom and Kopitar feeding him the puck. Wilson is gonna give you what he gives. Not gonna complain about that.

Agreed. Extend Vrana 8 years at whatever it costs before trading Ovechkin, though.

caveat: Did Vrana get any points in this year's playoffs? Ovechkin showed up. Might have better odds at a championship this year keeping both, although Schmidt was pretty good for Vegas on their run. Not opposed to your second draft either. Schmidt and Smith could be a good combination to get back, although you're right that the two picks on top of them aren't happening.
