Not a fan of either team so not 100% on value, just a guess

Calgary clears cap and adds a RD
Buffalo gets a LD and more center depth

Don't see Treliving trading Hanifin for a lesser Montour. If Treliving deals Hanifin it's probably for a Top 6 LW/RW i'd imagine.

Assume as part of the deal they use the cap to go shopping for Hall or a separate UFA

Montour should cost around 2M less per year for similar term, with the Ryan savings that's 5M more to go after someone

Can't see the Sabres taking on that much salary. It is being reported they want to come in at the low 70's in terms of cap number. Value wise the trade probably works for the Sabres

ignoring the overages for this year, they'd be around 77M and could still move out Risto or Hutton

Don't know how you figure that, Montour made close to $3.4m these past 2 season. He'll probably get close to $4.5m on his next deal that's only $450,000 less then Hanifin not $2m less.

There was talk he might not even be qualified, he shouldn't be expecting any raise. He probably ends up getting his qualifying number with some term

Most I see him getting is 3.5-4M a year, so 1-1.5M less. I rounded up

If he doesn't get qualified he automatically becomes a UFA, Free to sign with any team he chooses. So if he doesn't get qualified then a Hanifin for Montour definitely isn't happening no incentive for Calgary to make that deal.

I am aware......

I'm saying there was talk that he wouldn't get his qualifier because he wasn't worth the cap number
He is being qualified, I just doubt he makes much more than that number

He will be qualified at 3.38. He can take that for year and then go to UFA or he can go to arbitration he would get anywhere from 3.5 - 4.5 in salary arbitration for 1 - 2 years team option. If it is over 4 the Sabres would walk away and let him be UFA if it is under they would retain him for 1 more year. This is all obviously if his rights aren't moved by the Sabres prior

Adams has said he will be qualified

The cap number isn't what matters with the Sabres internal cap, it's the salary paid that does...though a small difference Staal's cap number is 3.25 but he is due 3.0 in salary. A better example is Stepan cap hit 6.5 but if you trade for him after his 3M bonus is paid you're only stuck for 2M in salary.

Moving out Hutton isn't going to free up much cash. If they can find someone to take his contract they still would have to spend at least 1 - 2 on a backup to replace him. Moving Risto only saves 4.4 million in cash and you are spending at least 1 million to replace him in the lineup likely more so again not really freeing up much cash

Borgen / Johansson both making near minimum, no?

I tried to make the team as competitive as possible, if the focus is just on straight cutting cap those two could play even if they're significant downgrades

Compare Hanifin and Montour last year before Krueger messed with Montour.
Hanifin is obviously better but not off the chart better.

Buffalo takes on a lot of cap (Kim will not like that, she will have to give up going to the hair dresser next week)
Montour's QA is $3,525,000
Ryan and Hanifin are paid $3,125,000 and $4,950,000 respectively for a total of $8,075,000
Calgary could save $4,550,000 next year.
That may be a sufficient incentive for Treliving to make this trade.

As a side note, Ryan was one of Jeff's centers when Jeff had 37 goals in 2016-'17.
