Sure, Hornvqist is getting old -- but come on, this deal is just silly. PIT is retaining nearly 35% of his salary and they only get a 7th back? He was on pace for 50 points and 27 goals over an 82 game season. He can still play and produce. With that kind of retention, PIT could do much better than a 7th.

pens have an internal cap now so they have to cut costs and hornqvist is the obvious place to cut since he cost $5.3m and plays on the 3rd line.

unfortunately for pittsburgh he has an m-ntc so that limits the teams he can play for. on top of that there are very few teams that would take on salary especially for a 33 year old with 3 years left on his contract. avs are one of those teams that have the space and need for his services. not a whole lot of negotiating power for pittsburgh.

If they retain that much on him, there will be teams other than COL interested in him and those teams would surely pay a better price than a 7th rounder. I understand your reasoning, but just because they may want to shed some salary doesn't mean that they will be just giving players away (although anything is possible with GMJR lol)

Omg would you crazy people stop with this internal cap nonsense. The pens don’t have an internal cap. That myth has already been debunked. Weird every time I try to look this up it says nothing about any internal cap. And if there was, our first this year would have been used to get rid of JJ. Ownership gave JR the go to make a contender at any cost.

No it doesn’t. Again, ownership gave GMJR the go ahead to make a stronger contender at any cost (outside of trading crosby). There would be no way to build a team with an internal cap of low to mid 70 million and keep the core. That’s nonsense and a rumor that Rossi (who is worse than Eklund) started because he has claimed its time for the pens to blow it up and trade the core every offseason for the past 10 years

No it sounds like it’s around 80-81 million cause that’s just what the pens do. The pens got rid of Bjugstad because they still have several RFAs to sign. And now with McCann signed to almost a 3 million dollar contract. That leaves them with about 5 million in cap space to re-sign Jarry and Simon. Jarry is going to be in the realm of 2.5-3 million and Simon is in the realm of 1-1.5 million. Leaving them with roughly 500k-1 million for call ups. They will likely trade one more player (probably one of Hornqvist or JJ to make room to sign a 3rd pair right handed D). Or trade for one.

that's when the pens did when they were a playoff team. were you a pens fan before crosby? before they were a playoff team they were the ottawa of the league. with covid and missing the playoffs the pens have to cut costs. $77.5m will be kind. 75m will be hard. 72.5m will be terrible. no idea how much they are going to cut.

I’ve been a pens fan long before Crosby. The pens didn’t miss the post season as their streak is still active. And no the pens don’t have to cut costs because of covid. They’ve been one of the most profitable organizations for the last decade. I think a pens fan knows a little more about the organization as I hear every interview with Rutherford. He has been given the green light to spend to the ceiling and do what he has to do to make a contender. They aren’t slamming the window shut. They aren’t about to waste the last of Crosby, Malkin, and Letangs years as they are all still elite. If there was a cap ceiling of mid 70 millions, then they would spend a 1st to take on a 3+ million dollar contract and would have just taken the cheaper player at 15.

they missed the playoffs this season. the streak is over.

pens do have to cut costs. it's been reported in the sports media. the pens have been profitable because of the playoffs but that's over now as crosby and malkin exit their primes.

mid-high 70's isnt that bad but the pens will feel a small sting. hopefully its not the low-mid 70's that has also been reported.

No it isn’t over. The nhl counted the qualifiers as the post season. Keep up. And I’ll believe GMJR and Mario over some sports media know nothing’s lol. That’s laughable. They aren’t trading core players and blowing it up to get to mid 70 million. You’re stupid if you truly believe that lol

should have taken the 7th. doesn't look like there was much of a market for hornqvist.

If the FLA trade goes through, I wonder if FLA tries to eat some salary on him and flip him to another team.

that thought crossed my mind. rumors are they are trying to cut costs too. even if they eat 50% they got out of an expensive long term contract almost scot-free.
