Nearly PPG in the regular season drops to .5 PPG in the playoffs, Looks like typical Pacioretty to me

But again there's anothing wrong with this, some guys will take you to the playoffs and others will step up their game in it. It's just that Montreal always had regular season players who wouldn't show up in their playoff games.
Edmundson's playing better in the playoffs by all metrics and I think that's why we signed him.

You can think what you want to think. I'll wait for him to step on the ice before doubting him

weve already seen him step on the ice

Look I love MB underrated and over hated
hes been god like last 2 years

but this on paper looks bad. Yes you can argue Edmunson can surprise and break out and be good. I agree that is a possiblity and i wouldnt be terriblely surprised. But lets be honest what are the odds of that happening

Realisticly he just overpayed for a ld who LIKELY will be worse than kulak and mete and for 4 years with a ntc

So yes there is some upside to this but its not worth the risk.

This looks bad on paper because he was the 3rd pairing defender on Carolina? Guess it was his first season and you can't look beyond last year.

It's funny, but intermediate contracts really show where Bergevin stands as a great GM

I'm a little confused? Are you saying that Alzner and Byron are signed to good intermediate contracts?
I'll be blunt, all of Montreal's long-term deals look terrible within the context of next years cap crunch.

Here is Montreal's entire 8-man roster signed past this season:

$10,500,000 x 6 years = Price (34)
- $8,000,000 x 6 years = Weber (36)
- $5,500,000 x 3 years = Drouin (26)
- $4,500,000 x 2 years = Alzner (32)
- $3,500,000 x 4 years = Edmundson (28)
- $3,500,000 x 3 years = Byron (32)
- $3,500,000 x 2 years = Chiarot (30)
- $2,000,000 x 2 years = Kulak (28)
---------------------------
Total Cap-Hit = $41,000,000 (50% of ceiling)
Average Cap = $5,200,000 (8 players)
Average Age = 32 years (36 at expiry)

And here are estimates for who they have to sign to stay average:

- $6,000,000 = Tatar
- $6,000,000 = Petry
- $6,000,000 = Domi
- $6,000,000 = Danault
- $6,000,000 = Gallager
- $5,000,000 = Kotkaniemi
- $4,000,000 = Lehkonen
- $4,000,000 = Armia
- $2,000,000 = Mete
- $2,000,000 = Weal
- $2,000,000 = Hudon
- $2,000,000 = Allen/2G
- $1,000,000 = Poehling
- $1,000,000 = Juulsen
- $1,000,000 = Fleury
---------------------------
Signing Costs = $54,000,000 (15 players)
Roster Totals = $95,000,000 (23 players)
---------------------------
Cap Overage = $13,500,000

There will be a purge in Montreal next summer (and they don't have the prospects to replace the losses).
And it's clear that Bergevin won't trade any of the good pending UFA's for futures this fall (but he should).

TLDR - The intermediate contracts you praise are about to sink Montreal for years.

lmao thats why we trade players

but both of you are right

intermediate contracts like kulak/Danault/Gallagher/armia/lehkonen/drouin have been great for the canadiens

but the bad ones like byron/alzner/edmunson are gonna be trouble

alright then with STL he was decent hes a decent third pair guy. But do you think its worth the risk that he jumps back to that. Even if he does the contract is still to much.

Than we're in agreement.

But most of the great is about to expire, and most of the bad will never retire.

And when the good has proven great, a future date ushers in a twist of fate, as teams must renegotiate.

Ships may sink when great comes due, most keel when faced with two, accept your fate if there's a few.

But I ain't never seen seven at the same m***** f****** time.

Brian Burke just said that at the time of this signing, Marc Bergevin said that “we need a #5 or a #6 defenseman” about Edmundson.

Marc, I love ya, but why did you give a #5/6 defenseman $3.5 million?

Ah, that’s true. We should probably trade Chiarot, since he’s on pace for 0 points, while Petry is on pace for 112 and Edmundson, Romanov, and Weber are on pace for 56. Meanwhile, Chiarot is on pace to have a plus/minus of -112, with 280 penalty minutes. Terrible player. 😆

Who's the league leader at 5 on 5 at +12?

Alzner 2.0, bottom pair at most, terrible defenseman on a horrible contract, Jooooel Eeeeedmundson!

We take the good news where we find them! I hope I made you smile at least. Have a good day! Stay positive!

Y U NO FUN?

You could have been a good sport about it if you would be able to put down your advanced stats charts for a moment.

But I guess finding stats that fit your narrative is more important. Like I did with the +/-. As a joke.

Why tag me? I don't think I ever said Edmundson was an Alzner 2.0. (honestly don't remember lol)

Edmundson had 1 bad game so far and it was the 1st against the leafs. Since then he's been awesome! Him and Petry have been the Habs top defensive pairing by far.

I love you MB, but this is bad. We shouldn’t be committing money to depth D like Edmundson, especially with our upcoming cap crunch. He’s not as bad as Alzner, but this isn’t a good deal, and I don’t see him as much of an upgrade over our current D-core.

Let’s just pray that Seattle somehow picks him.

Oof, how wrong I was.

Edmundson has been great this year, and he’s helped me throw away my rose coloured glasses in regards to Ben Chiarot. He’s been the perfect partner for Jeff Petry, and as of right now he’s definitely the front runner for the 3rd protected defenseman for the habs in the expansion draft.
