You trade kuemper for Kris Russell's contract which is 4M cap but only 1.5 million left to be paid and you get a first round pick. There is no chance you get anyone like RNH and there is no chance you could afford him either unless his contract is heavily front loaded. It isn't btw. Goalies are typically traded for a pick or prospects, you are starting a rebuild, and due to your internal testing policy you have very few picks to bolster your team and keep your cap expenditure low. The other thing is if you keep kuemper you will lose him or Hill in the expansion draft.

I would say the fan opinion undervalues what Gms would pay for Khaira. He's a big tough guy who can play 4C and penalty kill well.

Larsson is a solid right shot defender who clears the crease. most successful teams pair a good defender with a good puck mover/transporter you've got your puck movers on your left already. The oilers would keep him but they have nothing but defensive defencemen they need another puck mover.

Seems like there are a ton of better ways of saving $2M this year than trading your starter to a divisional rival for a pick next year and a cap dump to help them...
It's not as though trading Keumper would be the only way to save $2M or Edmonton would be the only team interested. If Calgary or Colorado has offered their first this year as reported, I can't imagine this interests them at all.

Having said that, if it was #14, I think it'd be sort of tempting for them.

Russel has 1 year on his contract where as kuemper has 2 so you would turn 9 million of contracts into 1.5 that is absolutely appealing to a cash strapped team. The first round pick I traded will probably be 22nd overall. With the flat cap there is no way any team trades for 4.5 aav in contract without sending something back. If you think Calgary has cap room look again, they have to sign 4/6 of their D. Russel is absolutely a gift from god of a contract if that's all you have to retain.

A 2nd in 2021 sounds like a deal for Athanasiou, but a 5th would be more reasonable for Khaira.

They drafted Khaira with a third pick so I think they'd be hesitant to let him go for that.
