I mean, it’s not feasible to run a 20 man roster. Unless you had cap going back it’s a no go. Honestly, I feel like you could take Bennett out and add lucic and it’s still fair LOL. You’re overpaying. Kuemper is probably worth a 1st. OEL isn’t worth a 1st + Bennett + 2 prospects with his age and contract. You might have to add a bit, but still I’d be trying to dump lucic on them as they’re cutting a lot of cap from this deal anyways even with lucic in it.

Where is this rumour from? I’d prefer to cut out the extra and just do 1st+MEP for Kuemper

This would be a good team, but I would much rather have Calgary spend the $8 million on Taylor Hall over OEL. It would be better for the team, as Hall would be the much needed extra strength to the foreward core.

I agree with you for the most part. I think keumper will likely go for at least a 1st and a prospect. i thought about trying to add Looch instead of bennett but im not sure the value is enough with lucic and i dont think Arizona will want to take on Loochs contract. i also thought about possibly habving arizona retain around a million on OEL but again im not sure they would do that. OEL is a top 15 D in the league and i think it would be unlikely he will be traded for less than atleast a first ++

I think Friedman was talking about it over the weekend. i think keumper is definitely the first target for the flames but I think OEL is a good replacement for Gio on the top pairing and moving forward as Gio retires or gets traded potentially in the final years of his contract

i tend to agree with you. unfortunately i think if we pick up hall and then dont win in the next 2 seasons then the future will be tough on the D line. GIO is already in decline and aside from anderson we dont really have any proven replacements coming up. i mean we could gamble on kylinton and valimaki turning into serviceable D. (which is a pretty safe bet). hall is definitely a viable route though

OEL and Keumper costs a lot in a package. Like Gaudreau, Monahan, and Valimaki plus picks. I don’t think Calgary would do it at that point

ya no. go read some insiders evaluations on those guys. Arizona is shopping them and there are multiple teams interested at keumper for a 1st and a prospect and OEL at a first plus a forward and a prospect. your fan goggles are in full effect

if arizona doesnt trade keumper hes gone to seattle in the expansion and OEL wants out

Why in the he** are we giving MEP, Bennett, and 2 firsts for this package?? That's a ton of assets for a declining defenceman on a terrible contract, a middle-6 forward, and a good goalie.

This might be the most homerism take I've ever seen on this site. OEL is incredibly overrated and on a terrible contract. Kuemper is very good but even then not worth any of those players straight up. Take off the coyote glasses YIKES.

I actually think our D is a future strength tbh, we don’t have much young talent up front but we have Andersson (top pair guy), Valimaki (2 years from being a top pair guy), Kylington (1 year from top 4 threat), and Hanifin (solid top 4 guy) all 23 or under. We also signed Mackey. If we draft Justin Barron at 19oa our D is pretty much set for the next decade. The problem would be if we trade our 1st our 2RD slot has to be filled in free agency

Admittedly, maybe a bit of an overvaluation. But you should take off your fan goggles too, Keumper was literally a VEZINA candidate this year, is absolutely not going to Seattle in the expansion draft, and would be worth a 1 for 1 trade for both Gaudreau and certainly Valimaki. OEL will go back to being an elite defenseman when he sheds the yokel that’s Tocchet has put on him. They will not be trading him for any less than a top 4 RHD or a first line center and picks. This trade doesn’t move the needle for the coyotes in the slightest

Goalies simply do not fetch many assets in trades. I'm telling you with certainty that Johnny or Valimaki are absolutely not going to be seen as equal value. Only way either gets traded is as part of a larger deal of core players.

Johnny alone would fetch at the very least 2 of a top-6 player/top-4 defenceman/great goaltender, a solid prospect, or a high draft pick. Valimaki was seen as too valuable to trade for Mark Stone last year.

you are making a ton of assumptions of players turning out. Kylinton has had 2 years at the nhl level and has not played at an nhl level in that time period(limited usage i know). i doubt his potential is above a bottom pairing. Valimaki hasnt proven himself whatsoever at the nhl level. he has a ton of upside and i agree that he may be a top pairing soon but again you are assuming he delvelops to his potential. andersson has proven himself hes the only sure bet we currently have and hanifin has been underwhelming for his draft position and i dont think he has much more upside. in 2 years he will be our top line and for me thats scary. as for mackey and barron those are extreme ifs and cant even be evaluated seriously right now.

you are massively undervaluing OEL. on arguably one of the overall worst teams of the past decade he has remained a top 15 defense man and is always in the conversation for the norris. hes got atleast 4 more years as a serviceable top line defenseman and he replaces gio on our PP units and replaces him completely once Gio is gone to trade or contract expiry. Keumper was a vezna candidate this year and he would hopefully put an end to the goalie carousel that has plagued Calgary for the last 8 years. ryan is a cap dump in calgarys eyes and hinistroza replaces bennetts production easily. so we get a top 10 goalie, a top 15 defenseman and a serviceable bottom six forward for bennett, two prospects and two first round picks.

The final point is Calgary is in win now mode. if calgary doent win in the next 2 years they will rebuild.

That's true, but Giordano will likely retire before he falls off, because while he's still solid, he's getting old. With him retired, Calgary would have enough cap space to pay for an elite defenceman.

No, you are severly overrating OEL. He's got another 7 years at over 8M which is number 1 defenceman money. I'm backing my stats with real evidence and here it is: The rumoured deal is said to be a swap for Hanifin who is younger and better in advanced analytics + overall defence and barely behind in points. (reference: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Eh5ZchhU8AAlgk1?format=jpg&name=900x900). Hanifin is currently the Flames 4th best dman behind Gio, Brodie, and Andersson which means OEL would be the same.

And he absolutely has not been in contention for the top-15 defenceman, let alone the Norris - I have no idea where you pulled that from.

Final point is this - OEL's contract is awful and he is an above average defenceman.

Once again they do not. Anyone that follows new hockey (advanced stats) would tell you this is a terrible idea. He's a team captain which inflates his worth to media outlets because they know the news will sell. Flames and Oilers twitter is scared of making a move for him and chirping each other at the possibility.

He's a 1D on a team lacking a true 1D.

He's overpaid ~2-2.5M and over-termed by 2-3 years. Bad contract.
