Description
Eriksson for Schneider straight up works: both have 2 years remaining therefore the buyout period is 4 years. Schneider’s buyout Cap Hit is $2M each for the next 4 years. Loui’s is $5.6M this year, $3.6M next and then just 666k the last 2 years. Vancouver needs the cap space now while NJD can afford to take a little on. NJD takes the heavy front but the backend of the buyout is minuscule. Vancouver takes the instant relief and swallows the $2M dead cap on the backend. I think both teams can agree to this.

Sutter with a 3rd and a mid level prospect should be enough to clear the contract.

Jay Beagle I believe is better than Nic Dowd but worse contract. So the 3rd is compensation for the extra $1.25M in cap Washington takes after Van retains $1M

Why would New Jersey do Vancouver this favor? Like you said, New Jersey can afford to swallow the inflated cap hit for the next two years, so why buy out Schneider/Erkisson at all? Just stash them in the AHL and get them off the books two years earlier.

I'm sure New Jersey would be open to a swap, but Vancouver would have to give up something in order to make it worth it for New Jersey to do it.

The incentive for NJD to take the deal is in actual money spent on the buyout not cap space. Schneider is owed $2M is real money and cap hit each year. Loui is only owed in 666k each year in real money with a declining cap hit. So it actually saves NJD $5,333,333 in actual money. I think that would be incentive enough for a straight swap and then both buy out. NJD might actual just keep Loui on the roster cause his actual owed money over the last 2 years now that Vancouver has paid this years bonus is $5M which is $7M less than Schneider who is owed $12M over the last 2 years. So it saves them In real cash that way too if they choose not to buy out Loui this year

NJD's incentive in taking Eriksson - their ONLY incentive in taking him - will be the asset that comes along with him. It would be high pick, prospect, etc. Otherwise, NJD has zero interest. They will keep their back-up goalie who is easy to bury or buy out....and stay very far away from Eriksson unless 1st picks or Hoglander, Podkolzin, etc are attached.

I'd have to agree with KPasty on this this particular trade would save NJ 7 million dollars on a buyout if they are intending to buyout Schneider. I know NJ had a rough year last season but they are closer to competing than most believe. The concept itself makes a whole lot of sense. Let's not forget how awful that Schneider contract is for Van to take on and buyout

NJD won’t buyout Schneider but would likely buyout Eriksson. They have the cap space to take that first year hit. But they have zero reason to even consider such a move unless VAN adds a young player, a prospect, or high pick to the deal.

Maybe the Schneider/Eriksson swap makes sense for both teams from a financial and cap perspective, maybe Jersey would prefer to just bury and ride out Schneider's deal though.

If money matters to Baertschi he'd be crazy to go the mutual termination route, there's no chance he ever makes close to what he's making in this last year of his deal and becoming a UFA one year earlier isn't likely to help him rebuild his NHL career, whether he's a UFA this offseason or next he's getting a PTO and that's it. Idk, maybe he can make almost as much in the KHL but I doubt it.

With the cap being flat and Buffalo sounding like they're going to have an internal cap they'll have no interest in Sutter, don't think they'd want him anyway and with the Caps in go for it mode they won't want to overspend on a 4C when that cap could be better used elsewhere in the lineup, they'd just keep the cheaper Dowd.

Would the Leafs want a smallish puck moving RHD in Stecher? He fits the mold of what they're going for in Toronto but he needs a new deal, Leafs need more defensive dmen then offensive dmen and they don't have much cap space for him anyway.

Maybe the Canucks should just waive goodbye to Toffoli and Tanev, sign Stecher as you'd assume he'll be cheaper then Tanev and see if one of the young winger prospects is ready for a job? I think they'd be wise to use Virtanen as a sweetener to get someone to take Roussel or Beagle, Gonna be interesting to see how Vancouver deals with their cap issues over the next couple years.

What is so massively advantageous that they deserve a high end prospect or high draft pick. The incentive is the actual money! Schneider’s been hot garbage the last 3 years. You have Blackwood as your starter, sign a backup. Every way imaginable this favours NJD. If they keep Schneider this year and buy him out next year it costs 6+2+2=$10M in actual money if they keep Loui this year and buy him out next year it costs 1+0.666+0.666=$2.332M saving $7.668M. I don’t understand how this can’t be viewed as a good move by NJD

Actually I may consider Sutter and Beagle.
They are two of Vancouver's top PK forwards and Beagle won 59% of his faceoffs.
If Buffalo had Vancouver's PK % with the same number of penalties, they would have given up 11 fewer PP goals.
I would presume that with 11 fewer goals against, the Sabres would have been in the preliminaries.
Vancouver may even toss in a 3rd for Buffalo to take them.

That's 7 million + in salary that a team likely spending in the low 70's will be taking on with those 2 contracts. That means no Sam Reinhart or no second line center. On top of that Suter and Beagle got run over in 5 vs 5 play. That equates to alot more than -11 over an 82 game season. So IMO these players make us worse just having them in our lineup and they cost us a good player that we will no longer be able to add/keep on the top end of our roster
