But everyone on here that wasn’t a pens fan said the pens would have to pay to get rid of Bjugstad even with 50% retention lol. That’s why I think it’s awesome lol

Everyone on here is dumb. How have you not realized this yet?

Already confirmed Koivu isn't coming back. Guerin reportedly informed him that this was the case in his exit meeting.

I hope so on the Brodin/Dumba for Domi/Strome stuff. Dylan intrigues me but not Ryan... And Dylan is concerning since he's an awful skater. This is major speculation on my part but the Flames are reportedly interested in Josh Anderson since they want a right shot wing with grit, maybe this opens the door to move Kunin or Hartman in a larger deal revolving around Dumba for Monahan or Lindholm?

I think Guerin will kick the tires on some goalies, maybe re-sign Soucy, and try to get rid of Zucc (that's not happening), but for the most part will be done with the roster unless something falls into his lap.

But the last few months everyone was saying how horrible Bjugstad was and pittsburgh would need to pay to get rid of him...

I mean.... they did have to pay though?? That's what salary retention is.

It’s not 2.5 million retention. I know that for a fact lol

Not $2.5m retained, it would be $1.6m retained to get to the $2.5m that MN is paying Bjugstad.

I mean the free agent market is pretty trash for centers this year. Haula is the headliner, and he's a 2C at best. I still see us trying to make an upgrade in the top 6 by using Dumba or Brodin, with the bottom 6 C's being Ek and Sturm, with Bjugstad playing wing. It's nice to have the flexibility and Bjugstad can take faceoffs on his strong side if necessary.

Yup, but at the very least they can field a “competitive” team and start to move it in the direction he wants to go. Hell, sign Haula and see if they can’t get that gopher magic back.

You can't buyout an injured player might have something to do with it? It also could be a little of PIT trying to do right by the player. Or that they don't want $1.75m in dead cap for the 21-22 season?

not injured though.
Feels like they go year by year...the 2nd year buyout is tougher but 600k this year to reload vs retaining the rumoured 1m. Just kind of seems like its GMJR doing what he usually does, wanting to do his moves earlier so he wasn't goign to wait till the buyout window to get his cap space

really cant comment on if this was a smart idea for the pens until they see what they do with this cap space

No. Asset wise. Majority of people said theres no way Bjugstad gets traded without pittsburgh adding to the trade. Salary retention isnt necessarily paying to get rid of a guy

2 mil in cap space is an asset. That's a lot, imo. https://twitter.com/frank_seravalli/status/1304579344644427776?s=19

They don't really have any cap coming off the books in the 21-22 season to offset the $1.75m in dead cap.

Thats not what was said for months on this site. It was stated that pittsburgh would have to give assets to get our of the bjugstad contract because he is injury prone

They had to retain a million and got a conditional 7th. "Awesome" is a stretch lmao

The fact they didn’t have to pay to sell him and don’t have to eat 1-2 million in dead cap for 21-22 while also making cap space is very awesome

they would naturally with the expansion draft selection
But 50% retaining thats a no risk gamble for the wild. I dont like you guys doing smart moves haha

Well they did sign Zucc and Spurgeon for a combined $13.575m for the next way too many years. So the bad moves are still there lol.

This trade clearly proves that would have been true though? There was clearly no market for his full contract, which is what 99.9% of Bjugstad trade proposals were. Cap space and salary retention and asset every bit as much as a 4th round pick or a minor prospect is, especially in the flat cap league.

Guerin was the crazy Spurgeon contract. I don't think Fenton was going to re-sign him and he would have been traded.

Clearly a necessary move, I just don't agree that they gave nothing up. Cap space is just as much of a commodity as a pick or prospect.

I mean they got basically nothing for him and this was probably the best offer so in all likelihood, other teams wanted Pittsburgh to pay to move him and a 7th for bjugstad at 50% retention is basically nothing. I mean people who said that weren’t exactly wrong lol. Pens fans were moving him at full salary for anywhere between a 2nd to a 5th (most commonly a 3rd). So they weren’t even close, rather the people who said they would have to pay to move him were closer

The cap space the pens obtained is all they needed. Even if they don’t get the 7th in return. Getting an extra 2 million in cap space without giving up more assets is a win imo
