Description
After watching MacDermid last year and seeing all my fellow Kings fans quiet about him, it ticks me off. MacDermid was SO good defensively every game. If you could get an assist for a poke check that went to your teammate who then scored MacDermid would have had A LOT more points this year. He is not afraid to gap up and close of the attacking forwards and everytime he did that last year something good happened for the Kings.

Screw the vet LD, give it to MacDermid. Give MacDermid a real shot at 1LD for the year. Give him 18-20 mins a game. We aren't competing anyway.

I'm tired of how underrated this guy is and people just thinking he's a goon. Watch the f**king guy for christ's sake.

Yes he's slow, but that can be an offseason task from Todd, get lighter get quicker.

For as slow as he is I've never really seen him get beat. In fact, most of the open ice hits he lands are on fast players...

10 years ago this guy would have been the real deal.

Maybe they still pick up a vet LD for 3LD in this case.

He was fine. Much better than the previous season, for sure. He'll be a solid 6/7 guy, but he's not going to get top pairing minutes with Doughty. I certainly don't think he's a goon. He's a slightly less mean version of Matt Greene.

I suspect that if everyone stays healthy he'll get 50ish games. Clague will fill in for the other 30 when the opponent calls for more speed than physicality.

I have no issues with him, but I don’t see him as a top pairing guy. He’s a good 5/6 but he shouldn’t be on the top pair. That’s my opinion and it seems like that’s how the kings view him as well

I think the Kings will still sign a veteran guy.

I don't mind Mcdermid, but if we can get a vet D from another team due to cap constraints over this off season to help the younger D and then flip for an asset at the next trade deadline, I'm for it.

While I do like MacDermid, I do have to agree with some of my fellow fans here in saying that I don’t think he’s well suited for a top pairing role. I don’t want him to become Forbort 2.0 where I’m sick of seeing him on the ice every shift. He’s a very nice 5/6D that’s got stay-at-home written all over him, with plenty of grit to boot. He probably flips in and out with Clague this season, and if the Kings garner enough interest to trade one of Roy or Walker, that third paring likely becomes MacDermid - Clague. Obviously though, if no other veteran option is available, he’s probably the best in-house option the Kings have.

Also, everybody should note that as our esteemed colleague @tkecanuck341 has pointed out, we need to have MacDermid play a certain number of games this year to qualify a defenseman for the expansion draft.

25 games to be exact. If whoever the Kings acquire for the top pairing role is on a 2+ year deal and isn't worth protecting (e.g. Leddy), then MacDermid no longer needs to fulfill that requirement. It would be nice to have some redundancy in the event of injury though.

All hail our esteemed overlord @tkecanuck341 🙏🏻

Will be an interesting storyline to follow if Blake does choose to add a veteran presence to the defence core. Right now there’s a number of options from a few teams looking to shed cap.

I don't think it's a question of "if," but rather "who" and whether that player is acquired via trade or UFA. If the Islanders can't get by TB in this series, I suspect we might see a LA/NYI trade before the Cup is awarded.

I say "if" due to the fact that there's always the unlikely scenario somebody demands a higher price than the Kings are willing to pay. Very unlikely yes, but there's always the chance. I like Leddy, but certainly not if the cost is going to be anything of significance, though the good ol' Komarov/Leddy package probably negates that.

Oh it's quite possible that the Kings can't get a trade for Leddy done, but I don't think there's any scenario where ALL veteran defensemen are off the table and Blake stands pat with what is currently in the pipeline. One way or another, the Kings will bring on a veteran defenseman, even if it's not their first or even their second or third choice.
