Description
I know a lot of Pens fans don't like Conor Sheary and hope he won't be brought back, but I got this idea recently. Getting Nick Cousins and putting him in a bottom 6 role alongside Dominik Simon and Conor Sheary could work pretty well. All 3 guys are shifty and strong at cycling the puck in the offensive zone, as well as generating shot attempts. Though they lack ideal size and physicality, they could be really annoying to play against as they will always keep the opposition under siege in their own end and that generates momentum for the team.

Other options for the center of that line would be Nick Bjugstad, Johan Larson or Erik Haula, there is enough cap space to add them if you prefer them instead of Cousins.

I think 3C is a big role to fill for Blueger, Center depth would be an issue for me on this team. Would move Murray for a C and keep Cousin's cap for a better 3C

Don't think you can bring Simon and Sheary back for those amounts and also pay McCann 3.5mill.

McCann hasn't proven he should make more than 2-2.5 million for me. I don't hate Sheary and think he should be a bottom six player that only comes up when the injury bug hits hard... But Sully will play him above Kapanen, Rust, and Hornqvist if he is on the team.

I think Hornqvist is on the team a hundred percent. He is a big locker room guy. Think of Kunitz in 2016 and 17. We knew he lost a step but he checked and found himself in the right spot repeatedly. Hornqvist is that guy now.

I think despite what he has had, JR actually wants to move Johnson. He is talking him up to get someone to bite. Might not happen, but not impossible. Look at Gudbranson.

Overall, not a bad look for the team. I'd prefer guys that check more than Sheary, Simon, and Mccann on the bottom six.

Bjugstad might get claimed (wouldn't bet on it) but there's absolutely no way Johnson gets claimed. Only way he goes is if you pay a team to take him

      Hornqvist doesn't get a 3rd either

It'd be a dream scenario as a Pens fan. But it's not gonna happen, specially any team claiming JJ. Bjugstad maybe, but unlikely, cause he's a injury prone. I think it's unlikely to get a 3rd from Horny, unless Pens retain some of his salary.

PS: Kapanen on PP1 unit instead of Rust or Zucker? No way!
PS.2: Where's Murray in this scenario? There's more than enough cap space to re-sign him and I think Pens should re-sign both Jarry and Murray, trading one of them till the end of the next season.

Kap will not be effective in the top six, imo. But the 3rd line could be one of the better 3rd lines in the league if they load it up with Tanev, Teddy, & Kap.

I know JJ isn’t a good defenceman anymore but a lot of GMs will be fooled by his pedigree and skillset. They’ll see a defenceman who is still averaging 18-19 minutes a game and racks up a lot of hits and blocks. They will see think he’s a serviceable top 4 D.

I’m not saying Kapanen is the best option but given how much the Pens gave up to acquire him, I have to think they plan on playing him on the top PP unit.

Thanks for the feedback. Over the past 2 seasons, McCann has put up similar regular season production compared to Rust before he signed his 3.5 million dollar deal and he’s also become a very good defensive Forward, so I think he’s worth a new deal in the 3 million dollar range. I think he struggled near the end of the season because he was forced to play center when he’s more comfortable as a winger, and he didn’t have any chemistry with his linemates either.

Yeah, I can see Hornqvist being on the team next season. IMO he should’ve played on the top line this playoffs instead of Sheary.

Rust played the game with a chip on his shoulder and dove in front of pucks more than anyone on the cup runs. I've never seen McCann get tough when it counts. That bothers me. Also why I wouldn't pay the guy 3 mill+.

But we are all. Entitled to our opinions and why we believe in/ don't believe in certain guys.

Yeah no doubt I understand there is risk to giving McCann 3+ Million, but looking at his stats over the past few seasons & his on ice results, that’s approximately where he sits at. I think McCann is a player with the talent and ability to be a consistent contributor, he just needs to have a role that suits him instead of being moved around the lineup in different positions and with different linemates.

I agree that he'll get a shot in the top six, but I strongly believe his game is not suited to play in the Pens cycle game. He's speed and lack of physicality best suits him to play on the rush. I think he'd compliment Tanev really well. I liked the trade on paper. But he needs to be utilized properly.

Yeah I guess his speed could make him a good with fit on a line with Tanev.
