I'm borrowing Richard88's idea for the Bonino trade. Even if he's only a one-year rental, filling the #3C slot and the second-round pick checks some boxes for the Avs in advance of the expansion draft.
The Buffalo trade assumes that Carter Hutton is no longer physically able to play (or no longer wanted by the Sabres). Another destination for Grubauer is Philadelphia, where he can replace Brian Elliott as Carter Hart's back up.
In my opinion, the resulting team is an improvement on the current team due to the upgrade at RW and in goal.
For 2021-2022, essentially Landeskog gets Bellemare's money, Makar gets Bonino's and Cole's money, and Palmieri gets Calvert's money.
Protected in the expansion draft: Burakovsky, Kadri, MacKinnon, Rantanen and three of Compher, Nichushkin, Asplund and O'Connor; Girard, Johnson and Makar; and Lehner.
Exempt: Bowers, Byram, Kaut and Timmins. UFAs: Landeskog and Palmieri.
Prospects in the system for whom hopes of making it to the NHL are high: Anderson, Beaucage, Bowers, Dickinson, Helleson, Newhook, Ranta.
In my opinion, this team is a legitimate Stanley Cup contender as long as Landeskog, Palmieri and Johnson remain effective, and maybe longer.
