Description
I'd hate to play against that 1st line.

Unsure about value but I feel like a Domi-Duclair trade would be cool.

Lajoie couldn't break Ottawa poor line-up... so I believe he would play in Laval as Kulak, Mete, Romanov are ahead of him... + Duclair is a NoNeed in MTL. We are looking for a STUD constant TOP6 forward RW possibly... not a good fit

Duclair did play RW, scored 23 goals and killed penalties. Little inconsistency here and there but he was by far our most skilled RW/LW (next to Tkachuk). Lajoie can be replaced but he has the chops to play top 6D (he's still technically a prospect at 21 years old). Picks can be balanced. Both are also hometown kids so play that as you will. 1 for 1, maybe not but there is a tentative fit.

I don’t hate duclair in a part to a domi trade, I’d rather see a winger prospect vs a D prospect. And the picks I’d say is close nit picking rathe see 3rd for 5th.

Hawks jump at that. You could probably even get an additional prospect out of them. However, I don't see Melnyk approving that.

Disagree. We will buyout Smith. Giving up the #80 pick OA to save $1M in cap just doesn't make sense when you start thinking about that 3rd round pick being a very good goalie prospect. For a 4th, okay, but not a 3rd.

3rd rounders have ~17% chance of making an impact at the NHL level...after 4 years development. If we can shed $3M in cap year 1 and NOT have any impact in year 2...I think they make this move all day. That frees up more cap next year if guys like Kubalik/Strome need to take 1 year deals.

Every $ counts in a flat cap world. This trade makes a lot more sense than buying out Smith to save $2m this year and adding on $1m next year.

Also, Ottawa doesn't really have all that much leverage when it comes to the money with Melnyk pinching every penny. Dorion won't be able to drag GM's over the coals for higher picks. A 3rd is generous/fairest.

Ive been saying Domi and Duclair for a while.

I want to see a Domi + Alzner (9.2M cap hit, 6.5M real $) for Duclair

Well aware of the chance of a 3rd rounder making the NHL, however 3rd round goalies are very strong goalie prospects and since we have (2) 3rd round picks, grabbing a goalie (there are good ones behind Askarov) seems like a guarantee. Moving De Haan or maatta for a 3rd or 4th, and buying out Smith frees up plenty of cap space, and regarding Strome, we can do a 1 year qualifying offer, he's not arbitration eligible and doesn't have a lot of options.

You're a very knowledgeable hockey fan. I 100% respect and can see that point. Especially when it comes to goalies. I personally would risk a 3rd rounder to shed the full $3M+

I'd be more inclined to move a 3rd if we can get a 3rd or 4th back for moving de haan or maatta. I don't know, I get both sides of it though.

I think we need to really draft a couple goalie prospects this year and starting in the 3rd round, maybe someone likes Daws.
