Description
One can dream! Trades are obviously not equal but I put the main pieces in there. the defense is quite young, but mobile, not small, and hopefully capable. I think the Detroit trade is a stretch, but certainly possible if we include other futures (the purpose of that was to dump Petry's salary and send to his home state).

CGY isn't moving Hanifin, Gio isn't a number 1 anymore, dude will be 37 next year do you really think he'll still play 24 minutes every game? No he won't, and they'll need Hanifin to reduce his minutes

The add-on for Ehlers would need to be Suzuki or have a deal built around Suzuki or the Jets would have zero interest.

Fair. With potential Hall interest, Andersson getting a pay increase, Kylington, etc. coming up , and Hamonic/Brodie as UFAs, I was trying to come up with creative ways to make room without sacrificing too much talent. Certainly more would be needed from Habs to entice CGY to consider.

I think people underestimate Byron's skillset, and his speed will help him play longer than most think. Certainly his deal is a year longer than most would like, but he would add more complimentary scoring, PK ability, and more veteran presence (over PEB for example who is 35)

PEB costs $1.8m and only has 1 more year. Byron costs double that for 3 more years. Not a good comparison.

We also have plenty of bottom 6 forwards as well. I'd make room for Lehkonen though if you make him available.

That’s a no from Detroit. If, Petry wants to come back to Michigan he can do it as a FA. You want Mantha, we want KK or Suzuki.

I meant more in terms of veteran presence, I'd rather have Byron in the lineup but agreed re: their contracts.

I don't think Habs will give up on Lehkonen yet... we are still waiting for a Burakovsky-like breakout (if that ever happens). Until then we're happy with him playing 3rd line, responsible minutes, and being paid as such.

Lol. A center coming off a meh season is worth more than an established first line winger with a great contract. Hilarious overrating by a Habs homer.

Danault is 7th in GF/60 at 5v5 this season among all centers. He alone is arguably worth more than Ehlers, let alone with Suzuki involved.

Mantha trade is a joke, Detroit isn't trading him but if they did old man Petry surely isn't going to be of interest to them

Danault as a rental has nowhere close to the value of a 24 year old first line winger with a bargain contract for 5 more seasons. That's why the deal would need to be built around Suzuki if anything rather than Danault, other than Suzuki Montreal doesn't really have the pieces that would entice Winnipeg.

DET says no, Mantha is Poehling's absolute ceiling which looks unlikely. Petry is old, if he wants to go to DET they can wait to FA.

Yes most definitely Montreal would have to add (As i mentioned in the trade), and probably entice with better prospect than Poehling. The only way Detroit would consider trading Mantha anyway is if contract talks stall, or they're blown away by an offer. The point of that was to include American players as centrepieces. Petry could be flipped for more assets anyway.

I LOVE how everyone points out that players are rentals when a trade is proposed for a pending UFA. Teams that trade pending UFA's almost always let the potential trade partner talk with the player before the deal is finalized to see if an extention can be worked out. Besides with the new rules of not being able to attach conditional picks pending an extention. This type of thing will happen even more and/or teams will have to just give market value. Otherwise off season moves will not get done.

Well whoever trades for Danault would be daft to do so without discussing an extension first, or at least having an idea of whether he'd be willing to resign first.

You’ve realized that your other point was bs and now you’re changing it completely. Homers and their desperation to win arguments.
Taylor Hall is the exception Andy not the rule when it comes to rentals not resigning with the team that “rented” them. Look at how well Kevin Hayes worked out for Philly. He wasn’t even a rental, PHI trades for his rights! If you re-signed Danault, he gains value mightily. I bet most people would agree, Danault with an extension = and maybe even > Ehlers.
Stop using Suzuki’s name. You’e not even in the ballpark. Zuke >> Ehlers.

What point have I changed? Montreal doesn't have any player that is worth moving Ehlers for. Suzuki would be the closest, but still requires a significant add or as you say Montreal isn't even in the ballpark.

So what you are saying is that Ehlers has more value than Suzuki? We would not do that straight up! Ehlers may be on a team friendly contract, burn he isn’t even at point-per-game! We would want an elite winger who leads our team in scoring, not another undersized guy who wouldn’t.

I don't think Montreal has to add because it isn't about value.
