Bjugstad is expensive, but he is not a cap dump. He is a solid player, he was just injured last year (Bjugstad re-injured right at the start of the year and they tried to have him rehab/play through it but that didn't work so he had surgery.)

Pilut having an out-clause isn't relevant because he is not making the NHL regardless.

We drop Pilut & Thompson and Pitt drops Bjugstad.
Personally I wouldn't help Pitt out that much. If Bjugstad is added in they should give us a draft pick as we are taking the cap dump.

I agree dropping the three works better IMO. My point was does Buffalo need Bjugstad as much as Pitt needs to get rid of his cap.

Montour is bad though. This is why Buffalo fans are cool trading him. Ruhwedel on basically a minimum contract was better than both he and Schultz last year. This team also has Marino and Letang. Zero reason to add a bad RHD.

Also, don't desperately need the cap space as this trade trades away most of their RFAs....

Pittsburgh needs a 3C and Bjugstad actually fits that. They would rather the 3C be about $3M so Bjugstad is only about $1M "too much." $1M isn't a big cap issue. Basically the Penguins are willing to move Bjugstad, or keep him. Positives for the Penguins on both sides. So he isn't a dump, but he wouldn't cost much (but more than Pilut and Thompson).

Pilut would come back if given an NHL deal, and he’s exactly the kind of puck moving defenseman Pittsburgh would love to have. He just won’t come back to Buffalo, so he is a non-asset to them. Taking on Bjugstad makes this a bad trade for Buffalo. They don’t need an overpaid third line center, they already have one in Johansson.
