Description
Went 1 year and paid lower on all contracts. Not sure how the RFA and UFA's will turn out.

This is the lowest I see any of the UFA and RFA's signing for. And even still the team is right up to the cap at 21 players.

Thoughts of the overall team?

I think that is pretty reasonable for Pietrangelo. He probably would've gotten 9.5-10 in a normal year. But boy oh boy this better be the solution because the flexibility is even worse going forward if this team gets bounced early again.

I could see Winnipeg or something giving him closer to 9 this offseason. But seems like he would want to play in Toronto for a bit less if he ends up leaving STL

They have the cap flexibility to do it. Leafs are paying more because of the retention.

Not that familiar with Holl but if he is a middle pairing defenseman (and at $2 mln aav), then the Jets giving up a for a 4th rounder two years from now for three years of him is a good return for the Jets.

Yea for sure. If they get bounced early, they seriously consider trading Nylander or Marner, they should have a lot of value. So it is not like they are stuck in the framework they have created.

Great return for the Jets. In this AGM I traded him to make room for Gudas. In most AGMs I keep him.

I agree that would be a solid return for the Jets. Since you mentioned that he was moving to make room for someone else, the rationale for the trade from the Leafs perspective makes more sense to me.

As an aside, this AGM forum is much more interesting than the Trade Machine Proposals forum. The trade machine forum is basically, "Give me Ehlers / Laine and a first for a bag of pucks and unwanted contracts"

Yea I can understand that. The Leafs are still retaining on that Kessel trade from many years ago. Which I didn't agree with at the time of the trade and still don't. He clearly showed he was worth his 8m a year when he got to Pits.

The good thing about this Bennett retention, is that it doesn't go beyond this year. So it isn't a long term handicap for them. So if there is a scenario that would altar their own behaviors regarding retention, it would be something like this. Not saying they would though!

Ya this is a fun place to play around with things. You can actually see if the trades make sense financially for both teams and what the impact is on the rest of the roster.

I think a couple interesting things this offseason will be what will happen to the middle class in this flat cap environment and which quality RFAs won't get qualifying offers (or will be offloaded for minimal return) due to the cap. It should be an interesting summer ... I mean fall/winter
