Description
I know that Calgary likes Bennett, but his regular season numbers are brutal for a former 4th overall pick. This gives Calgary a better goalie, a replacement 3rd line centre and a gritty forward that puts up better numbers than Bennett and is an absolute warrior. It also upgrades them from a 3rd to a 2nd. I'm sure I'll be skewered for it, but I tried.

As for the 2nd trade, well JR likes his retreads, Fleury seems to be in flux with Vegas. If Vegas choses Lehner as their starter, this gives them a decent backup at a much lower cost.
Finally, I know that everyone wants to see JJ go, but I don't think it's going to happen, the best we can hope for is a partner that covers for his faults.

What if they gave Jarry a NMC/NTC and expose DeSmith? I'm a little foggy on the expansion rules, but if Fleury were to waive his NTC to go to Pitt, doesn't that mean he no longer has an NTC. So the goalies exposed by Pitt would be Fleury and DeSmith. Fleury coming back to Pitt wouldn't be a long term solution anyways, but a stop gap to ensure Jarry's season wasn't a fluke.

Bennett is much better as a centre and moving him up to the wing, leaves the Pens with that massive 3rd line centre hole that they have been trying to fill since they didn't resign Bonino.

Rittich, Bennett, 3rd for Murray, Hörnqvist ($2M ret), Bjugstad ($1M ret), 2nd

Fleury ($2m re) for Rittich, McCann, 3rd

Both of these are horrible for the Penguins.

You are basically doing:
Bennett, Fleury ($2M ret)
for
Murray, McCann, Hörnqvist ($2M ret), Bjugstad ($1M ret), 2nd

A 36yo $5M backup goalie and a 4th line banger for all of those players, and all of that retention by the Pens. A Flyer fan couldn't have done a "better" job.

Fleury is not a backup, he's a stop gap to ensure Jarry doesn't regress. I get that it's an overpayment, but in order to get Vegas to retain, something has to give. Bjugstad does not have a lot of positive value because of his injury history, the retention is to entice Calgary to actually want him as a cap dump. Horny is a lot older than Bennett so the retention is to make up for the age gap. I get that tweaks would likely have to be made to make Pens fans happier, but the outcome is a stronger, younger team (I know Fleury is older) with cap flexibility. Hey, I took a stab at it. Maybe just cancel the Vegas trade, but then if something happens to Jarry, Rittich is the starter and that can't make anyone feel comfortable.

Fleury is a backup now. He was already slipping and is going to be 36 next year. The Pens are not a stronger team after your trades.

A team that is in need of leadership would take Hornqvist. Both Detroit and Ottawa would instantly make him captain. No need to retain or "pay" to move him. He should net a 3rd.
Bjugstad is a good player if healthy. If he is healed up he should also get a 3rd, no retention. If not healed then he is LTIR and not relevant. There have also been a lot of Bjugstad for Russell Edm AGMs. (same cap but $3M salary savings)
Murray should be able to net Bennett, 3rd easily, probably even a 2nd.
No need for the second going from the Pens to Calgary.
McCann could pull a 2nd.

The Penguins do not want/need Rittich nor Fleury. They can go with Jarry and DeSmith next season, and if that doesn't work, get a goalie at that time. Maybe UFA the following season. Getting Rittich or Fleury would also mean that DeSmith would need to be waived again, and he probably gets picked up this time. So your deals also cost the Pens DeSmith.

So your deals are:
Bennett, Fleury ($2M ret) for Murray, McCann, Hörnqvist ($2M ret), Bjugstad ($1M ret), 2nd, DeSmith

Legitimate deals would be:
Bennett, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd for Murray, McCann, Hörnqvist, Bjugstad (plus no $7M retention, no -2nd to Calgary)

Did you forget the fact that Horny has a NTC, I would say that Detroit and Ottawa are definitely out of the question. Plus even if Ottawa wasn't on his 8 team no trade list, Melnyk would not want to be paying that much for a player that isn't going to make a huge difference to the team.

Murray is going to get a 2nd or a player (Puljujarvi) tops. He is not going to be enough for Calgary to move there most effective playoff forward and a pick included. Just try offering that on HFboards and you'll get skewered for it. Trust me on this as Bennett for Murray has been suggested and Flames fans hate even that.

The only way DeSmith gets picked up is if for some reason a team didn't sign one of the numerous UFA goalies that will be on the market. Teams don't make a habit of claiming a back up goalie unless they have no other option. There are many other, better options that will be on the market for goalies.

Anyways, its fine, you don't like what I offered, however you are way over ranking Bjugstad and Murray and way under rating what Bennett will cost. You are also way undervaluing Fleury, but that has been his MO his entire career.

Again this was throwing stuff out there, to see what the potential is. Can't wait to see what you throw against the wall...
